Link panted heavily as he climbed up the winding staircase, following the eerie organ music that seemed to surround the interior of Ganon’s Castle. Bleeding from a wound given to him from a Stalfos, one of Ganon’s enchanted skeletal soldiers, he knew he would have to heal himself with a potion before he faced the King of Evil and rescued the Princess, Zelda. Using the ornate horned key he had grabbed after killing the last of Ganon’s henchmen he opened the locked door at the top of the spiral staircase and found himself inside a dark room, barely lit and filled with small pots on four raised platforms. In the middle was a thick column with raised bricks that Link could easily use to climb if the ceiling wasn’t sealed off. The organ music seemed closer than ever in this room, but in the darkness Link still couldn’t locate the source, still the room seemed empty of any danger so he sat down on the ledge of one of the platforms and pulled out his satchel. Navi, his fairy companion, flittered about his head watching him rummage through what he had left.
“You’re running low on items, Link. You barely have enough magic left for a spin attack.” “I know Navi.” Link said, rolling his eyes at her obvious statement. “It’s not like I can just trot on over to Kakariko Village and restock on everything though can I? Unless of course you want to fly on over there for me? Ouch!” Link rubbed the spot where Navi had just smacked him on the head with one of the jars behind him. “Hey! Look!” Navi exclaimed. Link turned around, expecting to snatch the little blue fairy and crush her in his palm like he had wanted to on more than one occasion since the two had been paired by the Great Deku Tree but instead he noticed a small familiar green jar lying in the shards of pottery. Quickly snatching it up he inspected it for any damage and pulled out a large glass bottle he had in the bottom of his satchel. The bottle had a small amount of lime green liquid at the bottom of its depths which quickly rose once Link added the contents of the green jar to them. After he was sure the bottle was emptied he tossed it aside, the small chime of the bottle shattering irrelevant as he looked at the array of pots before him. “Navi, how many magic jars do you think these pots have?” he asked. The tiny fairy flew around each pot checking the insides and tapping the outsides of some others to determine the contents inside. After a few minutes and countless pots inspected she finally flew onto his shoulders and gave him the status report. “ There is enough magic jars to fill your container and restore your magic meter without dipping into your supply, a few jars have some arrows one or two have some bombs so don’t throw them and the rest have enough health potion to get you ready for Ganon himself.” “Excellent.” Link looked at the cut on his arm, still bleeding heavily from the Stalfos’ sword. “Let’s start with the health potions.” After an hour of carefully restocking his items Link stretched his arms, fully healed and unsheathed his sword, the Master Sword, checking it for any nicks or dullness. As always the blade was razor sharp humming with a power he barely understood. He thought of the countless foes he had slain with this very blade and was amazed that is was still as sharp and deadly as the day he had pulled it out of the stone in the Temple of Time. Sheik, or Zelda as he recently discovered, had once said that the Master Sword was a vessel for time travel a key to the past and this bleak future if he failed in defeating Gannondorf. It was times like this one, when he was about to face life and death that he yearned for the time when he was just a misfit in Kokiri Forest. A boy with no fairy and no destiny, he never had to worry about things like the Triforce, or saving Hyrule from destruction. It was just him and Saria, playing in the lost woods and him dancing to her Ocarina tune. Now she was gone, dead from trying to save her home from Ganon’s evil, while Kokiri was infested by his henchmen. When he saw her again as her awakened form, the Sage of the Forest Temple, he was torn between weeping and rejoicing. Never again would she roam the forests with him, but at least she could protect her home once more from evil. And Ruto, a friend he made in childhood, also dead from Ganon’s cruelty. Her aquatic home frozen she died trying to save her people from living in ice, and she wasn’t the only friend he had who had sacrificed themselves for their people. Mighty Daruna, of the Gorons, and even Impa, Zelda’s own nursemaid all had fallen trying to protect those they had loved. He could feel their strength course through the six medallions they had given him tucked safely away on a chain around his neck. It was up to him now, he was the only one left to fight for the freedom of Hyrule and to save the last of the Sages and the last of his friends, Zelda. Suddenly the organ music grew louder, more impatient, making Link smile. He reviled in the fact that Ganon couldn’t reach him and that they couldn’t battle until HE made it so. Sheathing his sword, Link approached the door leading out of the storage room and took his time up the staircase in front of him. Ganon had waited seven years to capture Zelda and bring about their final battle, he could wait a little longer while Link took his time to face him. Finally, Link reached the top of the staircase, the huge silver door with gold spider web filigree in front of him waiting for him to open it and face his doom. The organ music was deafening, the organist playing louder and faster as if they could sense that he was just outside the door. Ready to face his destiny, Link placed a hand on the door triggering its opening mechanism and silently opening before him. He quietly stepped through the threshold, quickly taking in his surroundings and noticing the huge organ in front of him played by none other than Ganon himself. Zelda trapped in her own crystal sheath floated above him, she noticed Link instantly and pressed against the crystal prison as if trying to break it herself. Suddenly the organ music stopped, and Ganon straightened in his seat as the triforce on his hand glowed, Zelda gasped as her own triforce symbol shone through her glove. Feeling a hot sensation on his hand Link looked down and was shocked to see the triforce of courage glowing on his hand as well. Finally all three triforce pieces were together, Power, Wisdom, and Courage.
Ganondorf chuckled darkly and turned around, his blood red cape flowing behind him as he did so. “ These toys are too much for you.” He said in his thick Gerudo accent. Link unsheathed the Master Sword in response, only making Ganon’s smile grow wider. “ I command you to return them to me!” he said, raising his hand and releasing a wave of dark magic towards Link. “Listen!” Navi yelled trying to get close to Link, “ I cant help you!”“What!” Link yelled. “NOW you can’t help me?!”“ I can’t get close because of the waves of darkness!” “Oh just GREAT!”“Im sorry Link!”Ganon laughed as he started to levitate above the floor, Link knew their battle had begun and already Ganon had a huge advantage over him. Link had depended on Navi’s homing ability to accurately target his enemies and defeat them efficiently. Now he was flying blind so to speak and had to rely on skill and luck to take Ganon down. Link immediately ran into one of the corners of the room as Ganon brought down a fist in a mighty yell and immediately destroyed half the floor where Link had just stood. Link brought out his mirror shield that he had received in the Desert Colossus temple and quickly brought it in front of him as Ganon shot a ball of lightening energy towards him. Link instantly remembered his battle with Ganon’s phantom in the Forest Temple and crouched with the Master Sword in front of him, calling upon some of his magic to prepare for a Spin Attack. Just as Ganon sent another ball of energy towards him he unleashed his spin attack and flung it back at Ganon, taking him by surprise and stricking him with the energy he had just flung at Link. Taking advantage of his temporary weakness, Link quickly whipped out his bow, and pulled out a light arrow, one of the many Zelda had managed to give him just before Ganon captured her. Aiming for his heart Link shot the arrow, but was too late, Ganon had already recovered while Link was equipping his bow and laughed as he swatted the arrow away like a fly. Worse off, he had just unleashed one of his energy orbs and true to its name it hit Link like lightening , sending painful shockwaves through his body. The pain from Ganon’s blow almost forced Link to pass out, but before the urge overwhelmed him he managed to roll over and duck the next blow Ganon had shot towards him. He knew that he needed to be quicker in order to pierce Ganon with a light arrow, and that despite the amazing recovery rate his enemy had Link was confident that the next arrow he shot at the red haired bastard would not miss. Another laugh from Ganon sent a trickle of rage through him, if that tyrant was within arm reach Link would have ripped his vocal chords out with his bare hands. Instead, he took up a position his corner of the room and hefted the large shield in front of him. Link wasn’t about to risk taking another hit from those nasty energy shots Ganon seemed to favor. As if he read his mind, Ganon hurled a large one towards him, barely deflected by the powerful shield Link was depending on. This time Link was ready, knowing his enemy was going to send another one so close after the first in hopes of breaking Links shield, or worse his arm, he quickly launched a powerful spin attack and shot the ball back towards its creator. As soon as he saw Ganon collapse inwards from the pain coursing through him, Link deftly loosed a light arrow from his quiver and smiled in grim satisfaction as his enemy let out a howl of agony and crumpled to the lone dias in the middle of the floor. Adrenaline fueling him Link quickly joined his enemy on the small platform and unsheathed the Master Sword. Time seemed to slow as Link raised the deadly blade above his head and brought it down on his foe. Blood stained the blade as he continued to hack at Ganon’s form and after a few heavy blows he stepped back, he was no longer a young lad who thought a little blood meant his enemy was vanquished. The monsters he had slain didn’t die until there was nothing left for them to regenerate or heal, but Ganon’s form stood stock still…completely unmoving which made Link even more wary. Instead of moving closer to his foe to check for life, he moved back, ready to jump to safety in a moment’s notice. Instinct told him Ganon lived, no way would his fight be this simple and when Ganon drew in a shuddering breath signaling his return Link jumped for his very life to the sanctuary of his corner to face him once more. Link knew his greatest foe would be the greatest challenge he would ever face, but he was still surprised at how quickly he had recovered. The blows Link had dealt to his body showed, but were no longer bleeding and Link suspected they were already knitting themselves together as Ganon prepared for his next attack. Once Ganon turned to face him, his face contorted in rage, the only thing that had even hinted that Link had even touched him was the few burn holes still smoking in his cape. It took a significantly few more back and forths between Ganons energy attacks and Link’s counters before he managed to knock the King of Evil down again. This time when Link struck him he struck harder and in far more fatal areas before sprinting back to his safe place and awaited his inevitable return. And return he did, this time with not only a tattered cloak but with a rasping breath and still bleeding wounds. Link knew that he was close to winning and his suspicions were confirmed when the attack Ganon threw at him didn’t even manage to hit his shield. However his victory wasn’t going to come so easily, after the first fluke of an attack Ganon quickly realized the match he had in his enemy and started throwing more rapid and powerful attacks. The only thing that brought Link some relief was that despite his enemy’s prowess and mastery in battle he knew his energy and magic couldn’t last forever and that even the mighty Gannondorf would need to rest soon. The raspy breaths Ganon dragged in before each attack were Link’s signal that he was ready to start his offensive soon and when Gannon took in a particularly long ragged breath Link chose that moment to attack. By this time Link had perfected his duel attack combo, shooting back the energy ball at his foe and releasing a light arrow in such quick succession that it was almost impossible to see him switch weapons. This time, when Ganon fell there was no soft descent onto the platform as his levitating spell helped ease his fall, but since his magic was quickly depleting he fell to the floor with a heavy thud. Link, tired and running out of energy himself jumped to the platform again and stuck his foe. This time his enemy bled profusely as he continued striking him, whatever magic he had protecting him from his previous wounds had either failed like his levitating spell or was too weak to help him anymore. Link rolled the bloody form on its back and poised the tip of the master sword over Ganon’s evil heart, he was suddenly filled with memories of everything that had happened till this moment in time, his first meeting with the Deku Tree, meeting Zelda and learning of his destiny, and watching each one of his friends die in the fight to protect their world from this man’s clutches. With a mighty cry or rage and anguish Link plunged his sword deep into Ganon’s chest, pushing the blade deeper into him until he heard the stone dias scrape the tip of the blade in protest. Ganon’s eyes opened in shock and met Links instantly. Both men knew he was finished, and the spray of ruby blood that escaped his mouth as he tried to breathe was proof to that fact.“T..The Great Evil King Ganondorf…beaten by this child?” his enemy rasped as more blood flowed out of his mouth. “Li…Link!”he spat his head falling backwards as a golden light began to overcome his body seemingly from the outside in, subduing his body as the throne room started crumbling around them from the same golden force. Once the room fell down Link looked around and was surprised to see the dark wasteland of what used to be the great Hyrule Castle surrounding him. With the throne room gone Link could now see that he was at the top of Ganon’s Castle, the stairwell to the bottom of the castle lay to his left, but before he could even step towards it his attention was focused on the delicate pink crystal that was floating towards him.
As soon as the crystal structure touched the floor of Ganon’s Castle the beautiful prison shattered and Zelda was freed. Casting a withering look towards Ganon, she let out a small “tsk tsk” “Pitiful man.” She said disapprovingly before looking at her rescuer. Instantly her expression softened. “Link.” She said, relieved. Hearing his name on her lips was all he needed to hear before he closed the distance between them and kissed her his hands caressing her golden blonde hair to make sure she really was standing before him at last. Zelda returned his kiss and caresses, pulling her face back to stare at his eyes, bluer than Lake Hylia and just as depthless and to tear off his Kokiri cap and run her fingers through his sweaty dampened hair darker than her golden blonde but still the same shade. Seven years. Seven long years since he had seen her last, dashing away to safety on Impa’s white stallion as he stood in front of Ganon’s midnight steed to save her. He was so young then, but even then he was willing to die for this woman…and nearly succeeded many times. “You’re bleeding.” She said once they had stopped kissing, now stepping back to assess the damage he had sustained while battling for her and Hyrule’s freedom. “I’ve noticed.” He said smartly before wincing from the pain in one particularly nasty wound. “Here, let me.” Zelda said reaching into his satchel for a health potion. “Careful, I think a jar broke in there at some point.” He warned her, still after a few seconds she managed to pull out a few half empty jars and start handing them to him to drink the contents. It took a few moments, but eventually he was restored, the worst of his wounds now barely stinging as the flesh quickly worked to knit itself back into place. Taking a huge sigh of relief he finally took a good long look at Zelda, he had always considered her a friend, but seeing her after so many years and contemplating why he had risked so much for her during his travels had only awakened him to his love for her. He should have known that Sheik was truly Zelda, and he suspected a small part of him did know for only she would disguise herself to make sure that he had everything he needed to defeat their foe. Even though her elegant court dress was slightly stained by his blood and some wrinkles from his hands she still looked beautiful, but the look of worry in her eyes clouded his heart. “Link…” she said before with a mighty groan Ganon lifted his bloody head. Zelda screamed as he lunged for her but Link was too quick for him and pulled her behind him for safety. He withdrew the Master Sword, still stained with Ganon’s blood, ready to hack his enemy into pieces if necessary but as quickly as he had awakened Ganon’s head fell once more and all was still…until the ground beneath them began to shake and the castle rocked on its very foundation. “He’s trying to bring down the castle!” Zelda cried. Not wasting anytime Link grabbed her arm and rushed her to the staircase he saw earlier.“Quick Link!” Zelda yelled as she hiked her skirts up and dashed ahead of him. “Follow me!”
Link was amazed that with all that cloth she could still stay ahead of him, but regardless he held on to his cap and chased after her. The castle was shaking violently as large flaming stone blocks fell from the sky and shattered the staircase Link and Zelda were running on. Quickly opening the doors to the next stairwells with her magic they ran from stairwell to stair well, Link recognizing the rooms he was just in a few hours earlier before he had defeated his foe. Zelda ran a little faster, knowing that time was short and that they were just a few more doors away from freedom. Suddenly a ring of flames sprouted around her, catching her extended arm and making her and Link break hand and cry out in pain. Link knowing something was about to attack them, drew his shield and the master sword out of instinct and gathered his surroundings. He recognized this room. It was where he had defeated a particularly difficult Stalfos warrior in order to get the much needed key to Ganon’s Throne Room. Navi floated quietly around him, waiting for the inevitable enemy to show his face.“Link!” Zelda cried, pointing behind him.
“Look out!” Navi shouted, quickly hovering about the dirty white head of a Stalfos. Link barely raised his shield in time to block the heavy blow from the Stalfos’ sword, a nasty piece of work supposedly carved and whetted from the bones of their enemies. He groaned when he saw another Stalfos circle him from behind. Another chunk of ceiling fell from above and he was reminded that they were on a tight schedule. Positioning himself to a point where he was in range of both of the skeletal targets he quickly tossed a Deku Nut, blinding them and quickly decapitated them. Their bodies disintegrated in a cloud of dust and the flames that surrounded Zelda disappeared. “If only they were that easy to defeat all the time” He scoffed before turning to Zelda and offering her a vial of health potion. “You keep it. “ she said, pushing the bottle towards him. “You will need it more than I.”Link frowned and took a swig, then catching Zelda unaware, pulled her into a kiss. “There, now we both can have some.” He said, smirking at her surprised look. Already he could see the burn on her arm fading to a light pink, he grabbed her and quickly sped to the exit barely making it before a large piece of the wall crashed behind them. The next two stairwells didn’t give them any trouble, and soon they could see the large door to the entrance of the castle. Holding Zelda’s arm tight Link ran to the door as fast as his legs would allow. Not wanting to risk the disappointment of seeing the door locked he tossed a bomb at the door, pinning Zelda to the wall with his body and blocking the debris with his shield as pieces of the door flew at them. Once the dust settled he grabbed her once more and ran out the door. They had just made it to what used to be the courtyard when the rest of the castle suddenly caved in with a loud groan. Link and Zelda looked at each other, once again they had just barely made it out alive. “Finally,” Navi said. “The nightmare is over.” Link knelt on the dry brittle grass and unbuckled his satchel belt. Gently emptying his contents he took a quick count of what he had left in grim silence. It wasn’t pretty, he had a handful of arrows left, some bombs, and a few crushed deku nuts and seeds from his battle with Ganon and the escape from the castle, not the best but it would do some damage if needed. His potions were few, he had one full jar of magic energy potion left and a jar and a half of healing potion. He felt a gentle hand on his shoulder, it was Zelda.Quietly she knelt beside him and gently put away all the useful items he had laid out. “Link,” she said quietly her hands clasped on her lap and her head tilted down. “It is over isn’t it?” she asked looking at him and trying to read his expression. He pulled off his cap, and ran his fingers through his hair before letting out a defeated sigh. “ I don’t know.” Was all he said. Zelda gazed down at her hand. When all three of them were in close proximity her hand had burned and the three pieces of the triforce glowed brightly on the back of her hand. Now that she and Link were together the top triangle and the bottom right one glowed faintly, but the right side was faded and cold barely visible until you looked very closely. Zelda knew Ganon still lived, he was weak but his presence was still enough to trigger the triforce on their hands. She looked at Link and saw him examining his hand, showing he must know as well. “Link, I-I’m so sorry.” Was all she could get out before a sob broke out. She fell forward, her body collapsing in on herself as she broke into tears. Link pulled her close to him and let her cry on his shoulder, it was all he could do for her right now.
“Link I should have never brought you into this. I should have kept myself out of this mess, if I hadn’t-“Link stopped her and shook her gently, lowering his head so they were eye to eye. “Stop it Zelda. All this was meant to happen. You, me and Ganondorf were destined to have this fate.” Zelda tried interrupting but stopped when Link threw her a stern gaze. “So what if you never sent me out to gather the spiritual stones, then this would have never happened right? Wrong. Ganondorf was close to getting them anyway, it was only a matter of time before he starved the Goron’s out, or crawled into Jabu Jabu and kill Ruto for her mother’s crystal. If the Great Deku Tree didn’t send Navi to me, Ganondorf would have been able to take the Kokiri crystal from his dead withered branches once his poison rotted him from the inside out. “ Link looked away as the memory of what he went through flashed through his mind. “Zelda you yourself dreamed of me before I even knew your name. How could you think we would never come together as we did? Something greater is at work here. The goddesses left us these tools, these gifts because we were chosen to use them.” Link and Zelda both looked down at their hands, the bottom left of the triangle was growing warmer and the faint glow was getting stronger. Link could hear the faint hum of his sword as it sensed the great evil that was about to show his face. He stood and maneuvered Zelda behind him. “Looks like the nightmare isn’t over yet.” He said grimly, unsheathing the Master Sword and positioning his shield in front of him. Navi was by his side as always and Zelda was a few steps behind him as they approached the rubble before them. “Zelda, get back.” Link said sternly. “Im not leaving you.” Zelda replied stubbornly. “Zelda,” Link growled half turning to send her back to the safe zone they had just been in. Just as he opened his mouth to speak a pile of rubble moved, rising high off the ground to uncover the once lifeless body of Ganondorf who was now struggling to stand once more. Link instinctively raised his sword to behead his great foe when Ganon’s arm shot out like lightening and stopped his blow bare handed. From then everything seemed to move in slow motion. The triforce of power was now burning with an unholy hotness and Ganon’s body was growing larger and stockier with every second. His eyes lost all color until they turned white and started emitting the same powerful heat that burned his hand. His nose was replaced by a thick bristled snout and his jaw dislocated and stretched as a pair of thick sharp tusks shot out of the bone. Ganon’s arms now thickly muscled ripped the Master Sword from Links hands. “Zelda RUN!” Link cried as he backed away from the beast and reached for his bow and light arrows. He heard Zelda’s footsteps run towards the edge of the castle ruins where the gate the Seven Sages built started. Ganon cocked his arm and tossed the Master Sword towards her like a dart, the blade whistling as it soared towards its target. “Nooo!” Link screamed, but just as it reached her the blade stopped and plunged itself into the charred stone before her. “Nice try Ganon, but the Master Sword was created to destroy evil, not serve it.” She called as she pulled it out from the stone it was in. Before she could toss it in Link’s direction a wall of flames shot up around Ganon and Link, preventing him from receiving the only weapon he could use to defeat him. “Link! You must weaken him so that the Sages and I can send him back to the Dark Relm!!” Zelda cried. Link jumped back just in time to avoid being sliced in two by Ganon’s swords. He quickly sent an arrow flying towards the beast’s head, but the arrow had no effect. With a deep chuckle Ganon lifted a meaty fist towards the butt end of the arrow between his eyes and pulled it out like it was nothing more than a mere splinter. Now one arrow down, Link circled the giant boar and reached for another weapon from his bag. Ganon continued to swing his swords in fury- but his immense size made his attacks easily predictable and avoidable. Figuring he had nothing to lose Link chucked the Deku Nut at Ganon’s feet, the dust from the nut exploding settled and to Link’s amazement he saw the great boar frozen in its place. His white eyes tracking his movements but his body paralyzed from the effects of the magic. Moving fast he searched his foe for a weak spot, and noticed the fleshy unprotected giant nub at the end of his tail. Drawing another arrow he hit the thick end of the tail and rolled out of the way as Ganon’s body was freed from the paralysis and his foe stomped around in fury as a rage filled scream poured from his snout. Link was down to a few of the items he needed to incapacitate his foe so he made the best of them, circling his enemy and ducking between his giant stocky legs when his swords came flying down to hit him. Ganon’s tail was now bleeding profusely after three successful hits to it using his nut and arrow technique. “Zelda! I need the Master Sword!” He cried as he fired his last arrow into Ganon’s tail. Zelda quickly threw the sword towards him, using the paralysis of the Deku Nut on Ganon to their advantage. The paralysis was fading quickly as Ganon prepared for his newly armed foe and just as Link swung the sword at his battered tail he was freed and swung his tail away from the enemy. The battle continued between them as the fate of Hyrule rested on the outcome of these destined enemies. Link was able to get another hit in on the tail, but not without receiving a slice to the hip from the edge of one of Ganon’s swords. Ganon was getting cockier with each blow he threw at Link, assured that he was unbeatable with the power of Din at his disposal. “Your steps grow sloppy Hero of Time” he sneered as Link barely dodged a wicked blow from him. “You may be destined to be my enemy but you can never defeat me. My power is endless, it is the power of a God!” he proclaimed as he swung both swords downward. Link slid underneath Ganon’s legs, causing his swords to become lodged in the stone underneath him instead of in his flesh like Ganon had intended. It was a simple feint attack, but even the King of Darkness can still be fooled by the oldest trick in the book. As Ganon struggled to lift his weapons from the ground Link raised the Master Sword and brought it down on the bloody tail of his enemy, severing it with one blow. “Zelda now! Call the sages! Seal him now!!” Link cried as Ganon shot up in fury, his bloody stump of a tail twitching and spraying his life blood around them. Link ducked behind a cluster of rocks as Zelda called upon the sages, her arms outstretched before her and her body radiating a golden glow. One by one shadowy images of the sages appeared by her side, each mimicking the pose she made and each projecting an aura the color of the realm they protect. Ganon let out a mighty roar, one last defiant cry against the power that was about to be unleashed onto him. He raised a mighty claw as if to strike Zelda and the sages out of his sight when one by one the sages opened their eyes and unleashed their power upon him. The first was Rauru who sent a beam of blinding yellow light towards Ganon, who shrieked in pain as the light hit him, next Saria sent a beam of emerald green towards the beast, forcing him to cover his eyes from the pain of the light. Daruna brought Ganon to his knees with an earth shattering pound while Ruto and Nabooru shackled him to the ground respectively with their own powers Impa forced the mighty king to bow low to the ground with a forceful shot of purple light and held him there with ease. Knowing now was his time to strike, Link pounced from the shadows and lifted his sword high above Ganon’s head. “You may think you are defeating me boy” he spat, thick black blood spewing from his maw as he spoke and struggled against the sages powers. “But I will never be gone! I curse you Link, you and your decedents!! They will forever be destined to be locked in an endless struggle against me and my minions until the end of time itself!” He turned his gaze on Zelda and grinned maliciously “And I curse you too Princess. You can send me wherever you like but I will never give up my quest! Heed my words I will spend my days plotting and searching for a way out and once I find it we will meet again!”“Link now! The Sages’ powers won’t hold much longer!” Zelda cried. Ganon’s laughter boomed, dark and ominous before it was silenced by the thud of his head as it hit the floor. A burst of Golden light flooded the area around him as Zelda stepped forward and sent his remains into the Dark Realm, the sages following her lead and all joining together to seal it once and for all. Once the gateway was shut each sage began to fade one by one, Link looking upon their faces a final time before they vanished completely. Now all that was left was Link and Zelda once more, as Navi fluttered around the castle ruins to search for anymore potential enemies.
The triforce symbol of power was cold and dull on Link’s hand, assuring him that they had been successful and that the King of Darkness could no longer pose a threat to him and the kingdom of Hyrule. Ganon’s final words haunted him, and he couldn’t help but notice the same look of unease on Zelda’s face as she too gazed at her hand. He reached out to touch her face and comfort her but she stopped him and looked at him sadly. “Its time for us to leave Link.” She said solemnly. Link looked at her gave her a confused look. “Go?” “We must go back seven years into the past and continue our paths before this terrible tragedy in time.” She said, not looking at him. Navi fluttered beside him, silent for once. “Seven years? Zelda, I spent seven years searching for you, fighting for you, spilling my blood for you!” he cried. Zelda turned from him not meeting his gaze. “Don’t you understand? Everything I have done has been for you Zelda. Everything. I love you, I can’t go back now. Not after I finally held you in my arms again.” “Link we have no choice.” Zelda said, tears in her eyes. “This future here holds nothing for us, now that Ganon is defeated there is no place for the Hero of Time. If you ever want a chance at a real future you must return to the past!” “I don’t care about the future, I care about you!” He cried. “Link,” Zelda said softly, turning his face towards her own. “Please, for me.” “Do you love me?” he asked her. Staring deep into the eyes that had haunted him for years, eyes he crossed time and space to see again. “I..I don’t know.” Link paused, trying to catch his breath. He had suffered numerous wounds, but this one cut deeper than all of them combined. First he was angry, angry that he had spent all his time and energy for someone who didn’t share the same feelings, but he quickly realized that he didn’t waste his time. He was chosen for something greater than his feelings for Zelda, he was destined to defeat the evil that threatened Hyrule and he had completed his task. Zelda was right, if he wanted a future he needed to return to the past. “Link, I’m sorry. I just don’t know what my feelings are right now, I-“ Link interrupted her with a gentle kiss on the lips and pulled her into an embrace. She may not return his feelings, but he could feel that their destinies were always going to be entwined and his love for her will never fade. The feelings for her felt ancient, like he had loved her for centuries and that it was just being reawakened with every kiss he placed upon her lips. “You may not feel how I feel,” he said softly, gently caressing her lower lip with his thumb and engraving the way it felt in his mind so he would never forget. “But I know my feelings for you won’t go away. Whether you like it or not I will always love you Zelda. I will go back with you to the past, but only so I can spend the next seven years proving that my love is real and that you love me too.” He held her gaze and reached for the Ocarina of Time, a gift that sent them on this crazy quest so many years ago and something that he felt will hold them together for a lifetime. He placed it in Zelda’s hands and let her free from his embrace. Zelda held the instrument in her hands, but searched his face looking as if she was unsure if they were doing the right thing. Slowly, she placed the ocarina to her lips and started to play the Song of Time. Link remembered the first time he heard the haunting tune, and watched as time moved backwards, slowly at first then gradually faster until there was nothing but a blur and Zelda was again out of his sight. “Link..” Zelda’s voice resonated in his head as if she was speaking to him in the flesh “Find me in the past Link.” Those were the last words he remembered before the darkness overwhelmed him.The coolness of the marble flooring was what woke him. The piercing headache that followed was what shook the grogginess from his mind. Link slowly sat up and looked around him, and realized he was inside of the Temple of Time. He glanced around, searching for his partner Navi but she was nowhere in sight. The Master Sword gleamed from its pedestal in the stone, but Link knew that even if he wanted to he could no longer wield it and harness its powers. The memories from his quest were still with him, but the people he shared them with were not. He didn’t know where Navi was but he did know where Zelda would be, and he had a promise to keep. Quickly running out of the temple, he noticed that the three glittering jewels he needed to open the door were still twirling in mid-air and he paused. Panicking for a brief moment that he had hit his head and that the terrible nightmare of Ganondorf and his quest for power was still a reality. He shook those thoughts from his head, Zelda wouldn’t put them back in time only to repeat the mission they had successfully accomplished.
The warmth of the Hyrulian sun surrounded him once he exited the temple doors, and the sounds of laughter and music from the village square reassured him that all was well now with the world. He weaved in and out of the crowds, passing familiar faces even thought they did not quite recognize his. Young Malon openly stared him down as he passed by her and her father on the road to Hyrule Castle. He told himself silently that he would have to pay a special visit to Lon Lon Ranch later and see how his trusty steed Epona faired. Remembering that the guards would not appreciate a strangely clad boy demanding to see the princess he stealthily scaled the gates and circled the guards when they made their rounds around the palace walls and garden until he finally reached his goal. She was exactly where he had first met her. She was peering into a window, her beautiful golden hair covered by her cap and veil. She was slightly bent as she struggled to get a closer look at whatever it was she was looking at. He reached for his ocarina, the one Saria had given him when he left Kokiri Forest when a firm hand grasped his arm. He looked up to see Impa, scowling at him angrily until she caught a glimpse of his earring. It was the same one she wore on her own ear- a mark of the Sheikah and ironically the very same earring she wore at this very moment. Link pressed his finger to his lips and begged her to be quiet. Grudgingly she withdrew her arm and backed into the shadows once more. He withdrew the ocarina, and placed it to his lips. Slowly he played Zelda’s Lullaby, playing the song from beginning to end even though Zelda had already turned around with a gasp and discovered him. Once the lullaby was over he returned his ocarina into its holster and slowly met her gaze. He wasn’t sure what to expect, he knew he still retained his own feelings and memories, even now his love for Zelda was pouring through him. Her gaze raked him, angry at first that someone had discovered her eavesdropping then puzzled as his face seemed familiar. Time seemed to drag on for eternity as he watched her watch him, praying to the goddesses that she remembered him and what he would do for her over and over again if she commanded him. Finally she spoke. “Link?”He smiled. “I… ““Yes?” he asked breathlessly. He hated how childish he sounded, but he was no longer a man anymore. “Well I thought you would come through the front door.” She said, pouting. He couldn’t help it, he burst into laughter. Zelda soon joining him while Impa looked at them both with confusion etched onto her face. Happiness coursed through every fiber of his being, and the smile that shone on his face couldn’t be wiped away no matter how hard he tried. He grabbed her hands, tiny and dainty now, into his own. “I told you I would prove to you that I love you. This is only the first year,” he gazed into her eyes, and pulled her in for a kiss, chaste and quick compared to the ones they shared in the future but he still smiled wider when he saw the pink blush spread from her nose to her cheeks. “I still have six more to prove.” He kissed her again, but Impa intervened before he could steal a third. “Ok lover boy,” she growled “It’s time for you to leave.””Link ignored her. “I will see you tomorrow Princess.”“How?” Zelda asked, puzzled. Link just smiled. “ I will find a way.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
