A/N this is in no way canon, I use that as a base but this guy wasn’t born in the vault, nor is he looking for his father. His camp was destroyed by raiders when he was in his teens, he escaped and is now on his own.
Also I don’t own any part of Fallout (like that needs to be said) or make money from it.Love in the WastesHe awakes to the sound of a thruster. I thought I shut him in that room, how did he get out? He thought. “Good Morning sir! How are you?” He opens his eye to see a giant robot “eye” looking back at him.
“Go away Wadsworth, trying to sleep here.”
“But sir it’s eight a.m. your wakeup call” he replied in that damn annoying accent of his. “You have a mission to accomplish.”
He was right of course. He sits up and looks around him, at his house, if you can call a collection of metal sheets bolted together perched precariously on the side of a crater a house. His desk overflowed with junk he picked up around the wastes, he was in no condition last night to sell it to Miora, he would have to make a stop in there this morning before he head out. He was also running low on ammo and he would need a lot on this mission.
An hour later he was dressed and had collected the junk, and headed out the door. Right before he opened it Wadsworth called.
“Sir I have a message from Simms. He said to visit him before you left.”
“Right.” Just what he needed, to be side tracked by Simms. He would have to sneak out of town. The sun was still pretty low in the sky leaving the town in shadows, the light blocked out by its walls; soon it would be blazing overhead. “What a shithole.” He said looking around.
He was dressed in his enclave armor. He had acquired it days ago; he had snuck up on a small camp that had a death claw with them. He closed in on the backside of the cage, crept around the side and unlocked it, jigged the handle. The death claw roared and busted through the door, the soldiers there stood no chance. Before the first one running up could draw his laser rifle, he was decapitated. The second soon followed suit. The officer was hiding under her desk and wasn’t seen. The death claw ran off into the wastes. After that he stepped out from behind the cage and shot the officer. Glancing around he saw that the decapitated enclave’s armor wasn’t damaged, “why waste it” he thought, better than his metal armor. He took their ammo and armor and continued on his way home.
“Let’s visit Moira, loony woman.” He stepped into Craterside Supply.
“Don’t mind the smoke.”
“Uh, what smoke?” he said looking around confused.
“It’s around here somewhere.”
“Ok.”
“Anyway what can I do for you?”
“Need to sell these fascinating items I acquired.” To be truthful they where pure junk but she thought anything he brought her was solid gold. “Need ammo too, if you got any.”
“I sure do, just got a lot from a trader that came through yesterday.” They completed the trade and he left with about the same money as he arrived with but considerably more ammo. He checked his assault rifle, the Xuanlong, a powerful rifle he got from a guy named Prime he had to gun down at Jury Street Metro, when Prime tried to rob him. It was in good condition it would be good till he got home. He also checked his side arm, a scoped .44, why he keep the scope he didn’t know, but he did. It was good too no real problems. Not perfect but it was a backup and was rarely called upon. He started towards the main door of Megaton.
“Whoa there!”
“Shit, he saw me. Yeah Simms, I’m in a hurry.”
“I know, follow me. Lucky said to give this to you, you’re going to need it.” He left Simm’s house, and headed for the main door.
“I’m coming Ginn, I will save you.”
Ginn was a reformed former raider, about three days ago Hank (our character) was hunting around the wastes when he saw a raider camp in the vicinity, he pulled out his sniper rifle and lined up on the head of the guard. Bam, his head flew off and the camp came alive. There were only about five others, four of them men and one woman. He dropped two more before they went to ground. He lined up on one of them, she thought she was hidden, just as he squeezed the trigger he was caught in the arm by a shot from one of the others assault rifle, his arm jerked and instead of a head shot it gazed her leg. She rolled clear, “damn!” he thought, “have to get her later.” He knew where the shot had come from so he pulled out a grenade and hurled it in that direction. The raider jumped to run and was gunned down. “One more to go, then the injured one.”
“Fuck this” he heard off to his left. The raider jumped up and ran off, he was running down the backside of a rise so Hank couldn’t line him up.
“Ah, let him go maybe a Yao Guai will get him. Now for the injured one.” Sure they were all dead he still crept up to the “fort”, cars stacked about four high and fairly big around. He could see the blood trail and followed it carefully, now he could hear her panting just round the next corner, “probably with a gun aimed right at where I’ll be.” He thought. “Put the gun down or I throw a grenade around the corner.”
“I don’t have a gun, I dropped it.”
“Crawl out here, I don’t trust raiders.”
She crawled around the corner a sure enough she was unarmed. She had taken the time to patch her leg up, from what he could tell it was a fairly decent job. “Please don’t kill me” she said as she started crying.
“And why shouldn’t I?”
“I don’t like doing this but I’m safer this way. People avoid groups.”
“You’re a raider plain and simple.”
“NO!” she cried. “I wasn’t always. I use to live in a small settlement, but the raiders came one day and destroyed it, I was very young. They took me prisoner and after several months they let me join them, I never figured out why but I didn’t much care. I figured I could escape one day but I realized I was safer here than on my own, so I stayed.” As she told her story he evaluated her. She had her hair spiked in two rows, somehow dyed a shade of purple. She wore the raider painspike armor, that’s what he called it; it could very well have another name. She was also quite dirty but so was he and she was a raider. “I can help you if you let me live.”
“I don’t need to be stabbed in my sleep.” He said raising his rifle.
“No! Please, please, please don’t kill me.”
“Fine” he groaned as he relented. Why was he so nice to people he thought. He had a vague idea why, she had the same thing happen to her, raiders destroyed her home, and she was rather pretty. “Can you walk?”
“Kind of” she replied grabbing a nearby crutch.
“I need to get back to Megaton and see the doc. Your former associate got me good.”
“Ok, I might be able to make it that far.” He retrieved her gun a hunting rifle, but didn’t give back to her, not yet. On the way back they had the good fortune to run into Doc Hoff, he patched them both up for a modest fee and was on his way. Since they were good they decided to continue on hunting the wastes, he wanted to see how good a shot she was and how she could help him. They killed several rad scorpions, she was a good shot, and came upon a rather large nest of mole rats, they dispatched them quickly, since it was getting late they decided to stop there and eat, they had plenty of mole rats after all.
Their first night together. After they ate they sat there in silence. “Tell me about yourself” she finally said.
“Not much to tell I lived with my parents, in some broken down houses in the middle of nowhere, somehow some raiders came across us, as they started destroying everything. I hid. They killed my parents. One of them stayed where I was while the others moved on, he didn’t know I was there, I crawled out a connected a heavy pan to his skull, took his gun and ran. Ended up in Megaton, After several years I earned enough money selling junk here and there and used it to buy a house there. Now try to sleep you’re going to need your rest.”
“I can’t my leg hurts someone shot me.”
“I was aiming for your head.” With that she rolled over to sleep. Several hours later she awoke.
“You still here?” she said softly, the fire had gone down and her back was to him.
“Yeah I’m here. Go back to sleep.” Instead she rolled over and pulled herself up to him.
“I’m cold.”
“Had to let the fire go down, it could attract ‘guests’.” With out warning she pulled herself up to his face and started kissing him. He didn’t resist it, her lips were surprising soft and moist. After several minutes of this it was starting to affect him he pushed her away.
“Didn’t you like it?”
“Yeah but we can’t.”
“I want to show you how I can be useful to you.”
“Not here though. Let’s get back to Megaton, then.”
They never got there.
Around five in the morning they decided to get moving, it was Hank’s favorite time of day, the sun was low, but it was bright enough to see clearly. As they walked, Ginn still had a slight limp but had done away with the crutch, Ginn started the conversation. “So what’s your name, mine’s Ginn.”
“Mine’s Hank.”
“What is that?” she ask pointing to his left arm. “It’s called a Pip-Boy 3000, I found it in Vault 108, that is one screwy place. Killed several Garys.” She had a questioning look on face at that comment. “I found it in the lab, put it on, to see if it worked, it looked brand new, and couldn’t get it off. It is quite handy.” He realized at that point he was lowering his guard; he couldn’t do that, not yet, he still couldn’t trust her completely.
“How far is… ‘Megaton’ was it called?”
“Let me look.” They stopped and he checked his Pip-Boy. “Yeah its not that far now. You see that spot on the horizon?” He said pointing straight ahead and a little to the right.
She peered in to the distance, “you mean the broken road?”
“Yeah, that’s Arefu. Its not too far from that.” At least not for him he was use to walking. She on the other hand was use to prey to fall into their traps. They had been walking for a while he was thinking, and she looked about ready to fall out. “Lets stop at that ruined house there, its about time for a break. “We can rest here a little while but we really shouldn’t be here too long.” He recognized the area he had been here before and he never stayed more than was necessary.
“Why what’s here?”
“Muties.” Her eyes got wide. “Germantown is that way” he said pointing behind them to the left. “They have set up a base in the Police Station. Been there once to save some people and live further away than we are right now. We ran shooting behind us the entire way. Then they attacked in force, it was all we could do to survive.” “You realize how many bullets it takes to drop one?” She shook her head. Well not many if you aim for the face. He said as a smile crossed his face. “But they’re not as good a shot as me, body shots take a lot to drop them, more than we got.” He added that last point firmly. He passed her a bottle of water he had. She drank it gratefully. He drank one too.
“We always avoided muties, when we were hunting.”
“For food or people?” He asked.
“Both.”
“You ready to go?” He asked. “I need to check in on Arefu, but hopefully heading that way will keep up out the muties path.”
He was never more wrong.
They had made it as far as the Northwest Seneca Station according to his Pip-boy when all hell broke loose.
“HEY YOU!”
Oh shit! He thought. He quickly glanced at Ginn. Her face was wide eyed and frozen. Damn he thought he was wrong. Muties. He pulled her down the stairs behind the cover of the low wall of the Station entrance. “Aim for his body, hopefully its only one, and he doesn’t have friends.” He was wrong. He had friends and worse one was packing a Mini-gun. Gun fire was slamming into the low wall. “Shit he’s got a Mini-gun.” The fire ceased. He popped his head up, and back down as the fire resumed. “Well I was wrong, there is more than one.” “How many?” she asked fearing the answer. Does it matter we don’t have enough for one. She just looked at him. God he loved those eyes. Green and stern. “Four.”
“FUCK!” she shouted. He grabbed the grenades he had left. Three. Quickly he pulled the pin on one tossed it and repeated that on the others.
“OH THAT HURT.” At that the gun fire ceased again and they rose up and opened fire. From the smoke rising from the ground he judged he hit one mutie with two grenades BAM, BAM, BAM his rifle went in a three burst pattern. Her single shot hunting rifle drowned out. He wasn’t wrong about her accuracy, she was scoring headshots, they both were, despite the fact he told her aim for the body. Mini gun went down. But the other grabbed it up and opened up.
The sound of gun fire pinging off the metal supports of the overhang seconds before he realized what was going to happen he grabbed Ginn and pushed her over to the other side of the stairs and shouted “run!” The over hang on his side collapsed right over him, her now on the other side, was safe. The muties had advanced all the way there by the time she got up to run she got to the top of the stairs and took two steps and felt a huge hand close over her waist
“GOT YA!” he plucked her gun out of her hand and dropped it. “OTHER CRUSHED.”
“NO!” she cried out.
It was dark when he woke up. “Uh what hit me?” He looked around. “Oh right.” Ginn…he had heard what they said about him and knew she was caught. It was his fault, she wouldn’t have been caught if she was on this side, but looking at the tangle of metal she would probably be dead. He was lucky he wasn’t skewered. He was still groggy as he worked his way out of the tangle of metal.
“MOOO.”
“What the hell?”
“Looks like a fight was here.” He recognized that voice.
“Lucky.” he called.
“And it knows my name.”
“Can you help me out here.” He saw Lucky and his Caravan guard appear at the top of the stairway. Both guns raised he noticed too. “Don’t you recognize me Lucky?”
“Can’t be too cautious out here.” After a lot of struggling they managed to pull him free.
“Thanks” he said right before he collapsed. He recalled a lot bumping as he drifted in and out of consciousness.
Lucky’s POV
“We need to get him to Megaton, I know he’s got a house there.”
“It’s in the opposite direction.”
“I know but he is one of my best customers.”
“You’re the boss.” she replied.
They arrived at Megaton’s gate, Lucky tossed him over his shoulder and carried him through the doors. Sheriff Simms was on patrol when he came through the doors,
“Can I help you Lucky?”
“One of your citizens had a run in with a Metro entrance, it won. Where’s his place?” Simms pointed at the house. “I’ll take him there can you run get Doc Church.”
“Why didn’t you just bring him to the clinic?” Lucky heard the doc’s irritated voice as they made their way into the house. Simms chooses not to respond to the question. “Well out the way.” Doc church said pushing them aside. “Well he’s got no immediate injury, just as well you didn’t bring him don’t need him taking up bed space.” Church said. “Bed rest for a few days he’ll be fine.” They all exited his house.
At the front gates Lucky motioned for Simms to follow him to his caravan. “I want you to give this to him.” He said holding out a Gatling Laser.
“Why?”
“He was mumbling as I brought him back, mention some woman’s name, captured, his fault, and muties. He will want revenge and he will need this to drop them. When will you trade in that rifle for one of mine?”
“I’m happy with mine Lucky.” Simms replied.
“Remember I offer hot death in many exciting flavors. Well I must be going.” Simms headed back in, and back up to Hank’s house.
“Wadsworth.”
“Yes Sir!”
“Tell him to come see he when he wakes up or in the morning which ever comes first.”
“Yes Sir, I will give him your message.”
Hank’s POV
Stepping through the main gate now wielding a Gatling Laser. “I’m going to have to thank Lucky next time I see him” He said.
“Welcome to Megaton.” he heard Deputy Weld say as he hurried past.
It’s a long track to Germantown. “She’s got to be alive. I’ll kill every mutant to save her, and if she’s dead, I’ll kill every mutant to avenge her.” It suddenly dawned on him when did he come to care for her so much. He tried to save her at the metro that got her captured. Now he was rushing to her rescue.
He crept up to the rock outcrop that was in front of their gate; so far they hadn’t seen him. He whistled. “WHAT THAT?” he heard from inside the fence. The front gate opened, he opened up. When the smoke cleared the mutant was in pieces. “HEY.”
“That got their attention, good. Bring it on!” Five mutants dead in seconds. He picked over the bodies took the ammo from the ones wielding assault rifles, which was two. Grabbed one rifle, thinking Ginn’s would have been taken. Should he go in the top or the side door. If he used to side door they could get behind him coming from upstairs but it was faster. No he didn’t need to get captured too, start upstairs. He walked around back, no muties there, up the stairs and inside, now the fun really begins.
The halls were well lit, of course he knew the layout of the building, he was here before. He crept through the halls, deserted. He checked all the rooms to be sure then headed for the stairs. Down slowly, he heard heavy footfalls at the bottom. He backed up the stairs picked up a can and threw it down the stairs.
“HUH? NOISE.” the mutant slowly walked up the stairs as soon as it turned the corner he cut him down. He walked down the stairs and checked the hall. No one. Maybe I killed them all, only four attacked them at the metro and he killed six. He walked towards the jail where Red was held. She wasn’t there he saw.
“Shit! The kitchen!” He ran down the hall, to the basement. He kicked opened the door, he needed them to hear him now, “Hey muties, fuck you!”
“HUH? HEY YOU!” As soon as he was in sight he mowed him down.
“Ginn you here?” No answer, “damn it all.” He hurried down the hall checking rooms quickly, he arrived in the kitchen. There she was lying on the ground. “Ginn!” he said dropping down next to her. He could see she was breathing, she must have passed out. He gently slapped her on the cheek. “Wake-up, we need to get out of here. Ginn! We need to go!” Her eyes fluttered open.
“You came for me. I didn’t think you would.”
“We need to go NOW! I don’t know how many there are, but right now its clear.” He pulled her to her feet and pulled out the rifle, “here take this, it’s not much but it’s something.” They headed back up the stairs and for the door next to the jail cells. “Head for the back we won’t have to navigate the front gate that way.” He told her. “Right.” They made it as far as the power generators to the east before they stopped. “Are we safe?”
“Not by a long shot, once we pass Big Town then we are closer to being safe but not before that.”
“I’ve never heard of or been to Big Town, what’s it like?” “A lot of nothing, and despite the name it’s not very big. We can stop in they can defend themselves now plus they got some security bots. If we hurry we can get there before night falls.”
It was a hard hike she was exhausted and in shock, when he finally saw the walls he told her “Just a little further. We can rest here tonight and head for Megaton in the morning.” They reached the bridge. “Hey Dusty little help here.”
“Hey Hank another unfortunate person you save?”
“If I didn’t understand what you meant I could kill you for that.”
“What?”
“She wouldn’t be unfortunate if I saved her. We need a place to stay for the night, she’s in shock and dead tired.” He helped them to the center of town where he was met by Kimba, Red, and Bittercup. “Give her to us we will take care of her, take her to my clinic.” Red ordered. “She will be fine now.”
The next morning Ginn walked out with Bittercup, “you like now?” Bittercup asked.
“Huh?”
“I did her makeup.” She replied.
“Oh yeah looks good.” Red followed behind them.
“She slept most of the night she was beat. We talked a little, she says you’re a hero but we all know that already. How did you do it?” He had put down his Gatling Laser so he could sleep, and she hadn’t seen it the night before.
“I cut them down with that.” he said gesturing to the laser. “That’s some serious power where did you get it?”
“Lucky.”
“Yeah you are.” He got a quizzical look on his face before he understood.
“No I got it from Lucky Harith, the gun dealer.” A Scavenger followed by a heavy breathing yao guai was walking across the bridge as they where talking. “What’s going on here, guys you finally decide to open shops?” Hank asks.
“No he’s bring us robots parts, when we get enough we build more. You notice we have four, you got us two.” Red replies as a Gutsy floats by. “Hey man you got anything good on ya?” Hank asked.
“Depends on what yer looking fer.” He replied a little annoyed by the question. Gun fire erupted from outside the walls. “Muties” the scavenger said “Saw them coming, lucky they didn’t see me.” At that Hank grabs his gat and runs to the bridge. The thought goes through his mind who are they shooting at? He sees three crouched behind a car. “Bad move muties.” He opens up on the car, seconds later it’s a small mushroom cloud.
“I think I recognize that weapon.” He hears as Lucky comes around the corner.
“Hey Lucky thank’s for the advantage I couldn’t have done it with out it. How much do I owe you for it?”
“Nothing. I admit its one of my highest quality problem solvers and most expensive, but for you, you’ve done a lot for me. We are now even. So you saved her did you?”
“Yes I did.” He couldn’t stop a grin spreading across his face.
“May I see this girl you risk life and limb for and I mean literally life and LIMB.”
“Sure, Ginn! Come out here please.” She walked around the corner, her spiky purple hair quite apparent.
“She’s a raider?” Lucky asked.
“No it’s a long story and I don’t want to go into now she will hear.”
“She is cute.” Lucky added before she was in ear shot. “A pleasure to meet you, Ginn, was it?”
“Yes.” She replied in her soft feminine voice.
“May I see that rifle you got there?”
“Why?”
“It looks in bad shape, one last favor for my best customer.”
As he was working on the rifle Hank asked. “Hey Lucky I know you don’t usually carry armor but do you happen to have any?”
“I sorry to say no, not at the moment, but if you hurry I came across Crow in Megaton, he had a run in with some raiders and got injured. So he is taking a rest there for a couple of days.”
“Is he alright?”
“He’s fine, lucky for him his guard saw them quickly before they could fully spring their trap. And here you go little lady.” Lucky says handing Ginn back her hunting rifle.
“Alright thanks Lucky see you around.”
“Any time and remember, It's my pleasure to offer hot death in a variety of exciting flavors. Take your pick.”
“Anytime I need something I come to you.”
Back on the road to Megaton. “I never got to Arefu.” Hank mentions off hand. “You wan-”
“No no no! I want to get back to Megaton and crash for a day or two.”
“What are we to do when we get there?”
“After all that’s happened you’re still thinking about that?”
“You were going to kill me. I HAVE to thank you for not.”
