Chapter 1
The war against the scourge was taking it's toll on Azeroth, the death toll rising daily. The armies of Lordaeron fought hard to fend off the vicious attacks of the undead hordes but as soldiers...heroes...of the Alliance and of the Horde fell, in death they were being resurrected and turned against their very own homelands and families. The horrors and atrocities committed by the scourge were overwhelming and while the armies fought against it, villages were being overrun and devastation was left in the wake of the scourge onslaught.Small outcroppings of scourge were starting to pop up all over the continent of Eastern Kingdoms and there were no longer any cities “safe” from the attacks for either faction. Both Horde and Alliance alike had to fight against the constant threat. Raid groups were being formed constantly to fight against the siege of undead and in many cases the soldiers and adventurers had to commandeer the homes of near by villagers to lodge and regroup from battle. It was either do that or sleep in tents outside and risk getting snuck up on by scourge. It was during one such battle that a very large pale blue skinned Night Elf rushed through the door of a small one room house on the edge of the river separating Elwynn Forest from the shores of Darkshire with a small raid group of 4 others. The owner of the small but tidy home was a young human no older than 20 years of age at the most. A poor farmer hands son, Joseph Tiller had worked hard all of his young life, apprenticing in the Stormwind Counting House after his work on the McClure's Vineyard alongside his father who had been working for the McClure's all his life. He'd worked long hours to earn enough money to ask his childhood sweetheart Anne Stonefield to be his bride. Married barely a year, the two of them lived in the one room house with the dock to the Southwest of the Vineyard's in relative peace until the scourge attacks began. It was at that point that they had begun to be barged in on at all hours of the day and night by soldiers or adventurers. This particular evening, Joseph and Anne had invited some friends over for a game of cards and were all around the small table laughing when the door burst open and the small raid party came barreling into the room. Joseph recognized the leader, the tall Night Elf, as being an officer in King Wrynn's army, but at this point he was sick and tired of his home being under siege by any who happened upon it and he lost his temper.“Hey!”, he yelled, jumping up from his spot at the table as the Night Elf barged in and right away began to yell out orders to those in the home.“Just who in the hell do you think you are barging into my home and barking orders to my quests?”, Joseph yelled, irate.
Glaring at the young human, the night elf rose to his full height, well over seven feet tall and took one step towards the much shorter human as those in his party...a small female gnome mage, a male night elf druid, a female human paladin and a tall, slender female night elf priestess....all stood by the door murmuring amongst themselves and eying the human and his wife.
“I am Kaetarian Stormfury, Commander of the Royal Army of Stormwind and I am commandeering this house for shelter for myself and my group.”, he stated, his deep voice rumbling as his presence dominated the space. The guests, Anne, as well as the members of the commanders' party all stood, looking uncertainly from the giant elf to the small human who, strangely, didn't seem the slightest bit intimidated by the elf.“ GET.OUT.OF.MY.HOUSE!”, Joseph stated firmly, pointing to the door. Kaetarian narrowed his eyes and took one more step towards the human.
“You WILL accommodate us for the night or I will have you and your family thrown into the Stockade.” Kaetarian ordered angrily.
“Like hell you will!”, Joseph shouted as he swung his right fist, slamming it into Kaetarian's jaw. Joseph was extremely strong regardless of his size since he'd worked the Vineyard with his father, growing up used to hard labor. When the punch landed, everyone in the room gasped in shock, Anne covering her mouth, the priestess bubbling the Commander in an effort to soften his landing and the rest of the raid party froze in anticipation.
Kaetarian went sprawling across the floor and Joseph stepped closer to him. The paladin jumped in front of her Commander with her hammer at the ready but seeing the human making no further attempt to accost their fallen commander, the druid put a hand on her shoulder to stop her. Kaetarian looked at the human in surprise, rubbing his jaw.
Joseph stood with his feet planted wide spread, hands on his hips, glaring at the warrior taking up space on his floor. “You know, if you people would just ASK instead of trying to take over, MAYBE you'd find a welcome instead of a fight, “ he grumbled, turning and sitting back down calmly at his table. Motioning for the still stunned Anne to come sit next to him, he noticed all of his guests had snuck out and all that remained were his young wife, himself, the warrior who was currently picking himself up off the floor and the rest of the elf's group.
“ Well, you might as well shut the damn door.” Joseph snapped angrily. The raid party all looked at each other and then to Kaetarian who was warily taking a seat across the table from the surprisingly brave human.
In the hours that followed the raid party was allowed to stay for the night and Kaetarian learned of Josephs skill with numbers and his apprenticeship at the counting house. “ You are the only person that has ever punched me outside of my own family that has lived to tell about it young human. I am impressed. I want to hire you as the banker for my family.”
“Am I going to get paid an amount worth my time and efforts?” Joseph asked stubbornly.“You will be well compensated,” Kaetarian confirmed.“Fine, I accept your offer.” Joseph agreed, looking over at Anne with a smile meant only for her.
