Chapter 1 - Save Me A Dance
The Winter Palace was in an uproar. Ambassador Briala banished, Empress Celene assassinated by the Grand Duchess Florianne, who was executed in the following skirmish, and Grand Duke Gaspard proclaimed the new Emperor of Orlais. Servants swept broken glass and mopped blood from the marble floors while others skirted the puddles to deliver drinks to the guests. It seemed that nothing could dissuade the Orlesians from their party.
Lady Evelyn Trevelyan, Herald of Andraste and leader of the Inquisition, sighed heavily. She was currently hiding on a secluded balcony, taking a moment to catch her breath. The fighting had been hard, and she struggled to wrap her mind around the political ramifications. She was exhausted, and yet somehow she had been coaxed back into the rustling crimson skirts and gilded corset dress. However much it vexed Josephine and Leliana though, Evelyn had refused to give up her twin dragon daggers and the dark leather straps crossed her chest in stark contrast to the red and gold. During the disastrous events of the evening Evelyn had been more than glad to forgo the finery for her comfortable leather armor. Alas, Josephine and Leliana thought it imperative the Inquisition retain their presence at the ball. Which of course meant that Evelyn and her companions were stuck at the winter palace until the commencement of the evening.
“There you are! Everyone’s been looking for you.” Cullen’s voice cut through her thoughts, and she felt a flutter in her chest that seemed to appear only in his presence. Evelyn turned her head, her glossy black hair falling over one bare shoulder in a silken wave.
“Things have calmed down for the moment. Are you all right?” he asked, leaning against the railing beside her.
“I’m just worn out. Tonight has been… very long.” Evelyn replied, lifting her pale blue eyes to look at him through the sweep of her black lace lashes.
“For all of us. I’m glad it’s over.” Cullen smiled softly and reached over to rub her arm “I know it’s foolish, but I was worried for you tonight.”
His concern brought the touch of a smile to her own lips. Cullen’s smile widened slightly and he stepped back from the railing.
“I may never have another chance like this, so I must ask,” the commander bowed with a flourish and offered his hand for her to take “May I have this dance, my lady?”
“Of course. I thought you didn’t dance?” Evelyn smiled and took his offered hand without hesitation. Cullen pulled her close, his other arm sliding about her corseted waist.
“For you, I’ll try.” Cullen’s voice took on a husky tone as he leant in and captured her lips in a searing kiss. The moment his rough lips touched hers she forgot all about dancing, forgot all about breathing, nothing existed save for the heat of his body and the strength in his arms, and when he pulled away all too soon she was left lightheaded and breathless. Clearly the commander was just as affected, his hazel eyes darkened with desire.
“Maker…” he gasped.
“Cullen…” His name was a breath on her lips.
“Inquisitor?” Josephine stepped out onto the balcony, the very picture of propriety. She coughed politely, ignoring Cullen’s muttered curses as he reluctantly let go of Evelyn. The Inquisitor smiled at the untimely interruption, for it was amusing, despite the ache in her loins and fire in her blood.
“My lady” Josephine continued, performing a slight curtsey “There is a situation, Lord Abelard Belanger is questioning your judgment in regard to sparing and conscripting the wardens, he is causing quite a scene.”
“Should I know who that is?” Evelyn asked, tilting her head.
“Err, no. But perhaps your presence would quiet him, before someone resorts to violence?” Josephine suggested. Evelyn sighed in resignation.
“As you say, Ambassador. I will be with you in a moment.” The Inquisitor replied, watching Josephine quietly withdraw, and then she turned back to Cullen.
“No rest for the wicked…” She said with a wry smile. Cullen smiled in return and stepped forward to take one of her slender hands, but rather than kissing the back of her hand as she expected, he tugged on it, pulling her against him. His rough fingers tilted her head back.
“Next time we’ll find a better hiding place…” He said softly, their lips an inch apart, his breath caressing her heated skin.
“Cullen…” All she could do was whisper his name.
The commander placed a chaste kiss on her forehead and released her, chuckling at the disappointment evident on her face. “A conversation best saved for later I think, Inquisitor. Duty calls.”
Evelyn squared her shoulders and poked her tongue out at him, earning another laugh. She smoothed her black hair back from her face, the loose waves cascading over her shoulders and down her back. The scarlet dress bared her shoulders, adorning the porcelain skin only with wisps of glittery blood red fabric, the waist cinched tight with a shiny gold corset that gave way to layer upon layer of embroidered and glittery crimson skirts. Thin black straps crossed her ample chest and held her twin daggers in place over each shoulder. Evelyn’s grey/ blue eyes were lined with kohl and her lips reddened from kissing.
“How do I look?” She asked Cullen.
“Très belle, ma chère.” He answered, and she didn’t have to speak the language to know that he approved of what he saw, it was there in his eyes “I’ll see you back at Skyhold.”
Evelyn nodded then turned and took a deep, steadying breath, before stepping back through the doors into the ballroom, and whatever crisis awaited beyond. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
