Pain shot through his chest. Blood poured from the new wound the bullet left in its wake. He felt his temperature dropping as the precious fluid left his body. Joseph tried to stem the flow with his gloved hand, but it was futile. The bullet had clipped his aorta. He hoped that death would come swiftly. Better that than the alternative.
He awoke to the bright lights of an ambulance bay. His mouth was dry. He felt lethargic and weak. The detective rolled his head to the left to look at his shoulder. It had been crudely bandaged. Blood stained the gauze that covered his chest. His eyes fluttered as the coppery scent became intoxicating.
Joseph lay on the ground for an indeterminate amount of time. The floor had given out under him some seconds after he had been shot. He was determined to lay there and die. He closed his eyes and waited for the darkness to take him. Waited for consciousness to leave him forever. The darkness didn't come.
He lay there silently. Listening to the sounds of the broken city. He could hear the haunted moaning from the distance. Their sorrowful cries seemed like a language they had developed after losing themselves to Ruvik's mind. He had almost become one of them. He wished he had.
The sound of foot falls alerted him to someone running his direction. It was too quick and sure to be a haunted. To light to be a Keeper. Too human to be anything else. He listened to the pattern of the foot step. Heal to toe, with a click followed by a clack. Kidman. The pattern of sound matched the stiletto boots she wore. Why she wore those was beyond him. They weren't exactly practical for running. However, he noted that she seemed rather adept at running in heals. He wondered if she would be faster if her feet were allowed to fall more naturally.
Joseph's guess proved true when the woman stepped out of the shadows and knelt beside him. She gently caressed his face with her hands as she checked for signs of life. He grabbed her wrist with a bloodied glove. Touch told him that she was real, however her lack of scent told him otherwise. This Kidman was only a projection. Real enough to interact with his world, but not entirely present.
"Joseph! I'm going to get you out of here. I'm sorry. I....I'm so sorry." Kidman stuttered. Joseph could barely hear her. He felt himself become grounded. Like his mind was being rooted to something solid.
"What's happening?" He asked.
"We're resuscitating your body. As soon as your vitals are stable, we'll pull you back." Kidman answered.
"Please let me die." Joseph pleaded. He cried as a jolt shot through his chest to his side.
"I can't. Not when Sebastian needs you." Kidman stated.
Sebastian. He had almost forgotten about his partner. No, he had willfully forgotten his partner. He needed to if he was going to pass on.
"He'll live without me." Joseph growled as another jolt passed through his body.
"No he won't. You're his only anchor to reality now. You're the only thing keeping him alive..." Kidman paused. "He thought I had killed you. As soon as he disconnected from the machine I...I left him evidence of the contrary. I gave him hope. If you won't fight for yourself, then fight for him."
His breathing was fast and erratic. Another jolt coursed through his body. His eyes were clinched shut as the pain subsided. He growled as another jolt hit him. With unknown strength, he bolted up and grasped Kidman's face in his gloved hands. His acid green eyes looking deep into her sky blue ones. Her lips quivered in fear. Overcome by lust and hunger, Joseph took her lips with his own. He hungrily explored her mouth with his tongue. She made small moans of protest as he nipped at her lips with his teeth. There was no blood to draw from them, which frustrated him. He roared as another jolt passed through him, causing him to break contact with Kidman. Darkness surrounded him as he felt himself falling backwards.
One of the riders became alarmed by his erratic movements and growls. His breath hitched in his throat as the scent of warm blood overwhelmed him. It was so inviting.
The riders were preparing a sedative. With a roar, Joseph tore through the restraints on the gurney. A rider was ready with a syringe, but he wasn't fast enough. Joseph grabbed the hand with the needle and yanked back hard. Bones cracked and skin split as Joseph broke the rider's wrist. Blood spilled out of the torn artery. Joseph clamped his teeth onto the wound, drawing as much blood from it as he could. It seemed like only seconds ticked by before this one was dry. It wasn't enough. He needed more.
The second rider was banging on the window to the cabin. His screams filled the bay as Joseph's teeth effortlessly tore into the flesh of his neck. Blood sprayed everywhere as the jugular was breached. It still wasn't enough. His attention now turned on the driver.
