This fic takes place in an alternate dimension where Commander Shepard was never relieved of duty, instead was sent out to prepare for the reapers and so she/he never needed to die.

Shepard was a little frustrated. Why would she have to wait a half hour to talk to a guy for five minutes! She sat angrily and crossed her arms. She caught herself gazing out into the Presidium's gardens. Nearby a Turian and Salarian were arguing wether it was better to go buy a gun, or a set of armor. A Turian C-Sec walked up to Shepard with a man in handcuffs behind him.
"Sorry to keep you waiting", the guard told her ,"but you'll have to talk to him in person. The console is down."
"It's ok, I prefer to talk to people in person.", Shepard answered.
"Okay then. I'll be at the desk. He's been pretty cooperative." The Turian explained while walking away.
Shepard eyed him curiously. He wasn't exactly someone who looked like an assassin, he was tall and muscular with messy blond hair and dark blue eyes.
"Maybe he turned himself in because he doesn't know how to kill.", Shepard thought to herself.
"Why did you turn yourself in?", Shepard asked him
"Didn't want to kill the person I was assigned to.", He answered.
"Who was that person?"
"You."
"So you didn't want to kill me or couldn't?", she asked him in a cocky tone.
"Didn't want to."
"Why?"
"Because it was just a butthurt Batarian who wanted you to die in a fight but was getting to impatient to wait. I, however, have respect for what you're doing."
"How would you like to help me do what you have respect for?", She asked him
"Sure, I'll be by the guard when you're ready to head out"
That was weird to her. She expected she need to bargain with him. She watched him walk off with the guard's gun buried into his back.
*****
Shepard found him down in the cargo bay at the weapons bench, taking apart weapons and using those parts to modify other weapons.
"Hello commander.", he said as she walked behind him ,"Is the something you'd like to talk about?"
"Yes, you."
"Like what?"
"Like what do I call you"
"Kyle.", he answered simply.
"Do you have a last name Kyle?"
"No."
"Where you from?"
Kyle thought for a moment.
"A place."
Shepard crossed her arms.
"You know, it will be a little hard to trust you if you won't even tell me where you're from."
Kyle sighed and dropped what he was working on back down to the bench.
"It's not just because I don't want to talk about it, I... don't know."
"What do you mean?", she asked curiously.
He turned around so he could look at her.
"I mean, it was a big, nameless space station."
"Maybe we should talk about something simpler, like how old are you?"
"Twenty-three, have you ever heard of the Pure Warrior project."
She thought about it for a moment. It was something from five years ago, a retired scientist, Carl Evolas, was abducting children and made an attempt at pure warriors, no genetic engineering, just training. When they stopped him 5 years ago they found out it had been going on for 27 years and it was... classified.
"You..."
"Yeah, I was part of that, born and raised there."
"Is that why you respect me?"
"Yeah you and the others saved me, and when I was hired to kill you, I guess it was a bit of a wake up call. I was getting dangerous, I was becoming what he tried to make us..." Kyle voice trailed off.
"So you turned yourself in."
"Yeah. I'm going to get back to work on... ", he turned back to the table "... this stuff."
"I'm here if you ever need to talk."
Kyle grunted in return.
Shepard went back to the elevator pitying Kyle, no one should've gone through what he did.
