The spring air was crisp and full of the sweet musky aroma of newly budding plant life. There was still a bit of a bite of chill left, it sent goose bumps down Reileigh’s pale slender arms. Her legs prickled, making her question her wardrobe. The buggy that she was in was comfy enough, even with the straw beneath her poking her exposed flesh. She smiled and opened her olive green eyes. The sun was setting, sending casts of shadows over the wide-open land. The driver of the buggy, Caine as she came to know, was humming an unfamiliar tune.
Caine saw Reiliegh at the dock and offered her a ride to her destination, since he was heading that way anyway. She looked to the trader who helped her get this far, and nodded her head to him, waving a final goodbye. She wondered if she would ever see him again. He was some sort of trader that traveled from town to town, collecting and dropping off goods. He had always been pleasant with her when he would come into her Grandmothers little shop, making small talk and always talking about the different towns he went to. She longed for country life. Since she was a little girl, Reileigh would always plant small gardens that would sit on her small apartment balcony. With the help of a friend only she could see. The little sprite was resting next to her, happy to be getting away from the city. When playing with friends, she would make believe that she was a famous rancher who had all the best crops for sale. It wasn’t until her Grandmother had passed away, that she even thought it was possible. She had lived with her grandmother in the city since she was born. Her mother and father were out running errands for the shop, when they lost control of the car and lost their lives. She couldn’t remember them; she only knew them from pictures, and stories that her grandmother would tell her. She kept a picture of her parents in her pocket at all times, and would often look at it. Without thinking, she had taken the wrinkled picture from her pocket, and studied the faces of her mother and father. She smiled as she traced their features. She looked like her mother, slim waist, yet curvy, short in stature, intense green eyes, and a kind and attractive face. She had her father’s thick burgundy hair, and apparently his witty and quick-tempered attitude. The only thing that seemed to come out of nowhere, was the mass of wild curls that coiled tightly down to her waist. Reileigh kept those curls in check by braiding them tightly, and hiding them under her mass array of bandanas. She put the photo away and sighed deeply, looking up to the orange sky.Her grandmother had passed away just a month ago. With no other living relatives, nothing could keep her back. She would always remember her grandmother, and the little shop that she left behind. But it was time for her to chase her dreams. The trader had come in one day as Reileigh struggled to keep the shop going. It must have been obvious that she was failing horribly, because he didn’t waste a moment to let her know what was up. “You don’t have to stay here ya’ know.” Reighly looked up from her task and furrowed her brow. “Come again?” The trader smirked. “You can leave here, sell what you can and go.” He looked like he just had an epiphany, cause he lit up as he reached into his warn jean pocket, and fished out a mass of crumpled paper and receipts. He sat them down on the counter and went through them until he came across the one he was looking for. He shuffled towards her and handed out the piece of paper. “Here, I think this is right up your ally.” Reighligh questioned him with her eyes and took the paper from his weathered hand. She opened the paper and started to read.
FARMER WANTED!!!Most of the ink on the page bled from getting wet. She could only make out a few sentences, at the bottom it said to write a letter explaining why she should be chosen to run a farm, and to send it to Harmonica town’s Mayor. Reighligh looked up to the trader whose name she could not recall, and raised a brow. “You think I have a chance?” He shrugged his shoulders and smiled. “Beats me. Just looks like you need a change of pace. At the very least it’s worth a shot. Harmonica town is a real nice place. Slow pace, comfortable. Think on it. I leave for Harmonica town ever Friday if you wanna hitch a ride. Meet me at the pier.” With that, he tipped his hat to her and took his leave from the tiny shop.
It only took Reileigh two weeks to sell the shop, gather her personal effects into a few duffle bags, sell the rest of her belongings, and head on her way to her new life. She was scared, excited, and a little overwhelmed. She sent the letter out the morning after she talked with the trader, and got a response back in a week. To her, it felt like a lifetime. But they accepted her request. “Bring it on Harmonica town! Rei is on her way.” The nameless trader was at the dock, as promised. He offered her a warms smile and helped her bring her luggage on board. “Ya’ll set little miss?” She hesitated. Was she really ready for this? Was she ready to leave everything behind and start a new life? She looked over her shoulder to the city behind her and then back to the friendly trader and nodded. “All set.”The buggy came to a stop, shaking Reiliegh from her trance. Sitting up she looked to Finn who was buzzing around her in Glee. “Rei! We need to see the Harvest Goddess!” Rei smiled and nodded. “Sure, in a few days when we are settled in.” Finn shook his head. “No no no! We have to go now…” Rei put up her hand and shooshed him. “A few days…” The buggy bounced a little as Caine got down from his seat, making his way around the corner to her. “What was that?” Rei put her hand to her mouth, blushing slightly. “Oh nothing, just talking to myself.” She laughed nervously and jumped down from the buggy and stretching her arms over her head, closing her eyes and taking a deep drink of the fresh cool air that filled her soul with joy. She opened her eyes and looked around. She was in front of what looked like a City Hall, to the left of that, was a small Photography studio, and to the right looked to be various other shops and homes. The town was small, and perfect in every way. “I am gonna take your things to your farm, Mayor Hamilton will bring you over after he shows you around. Its not far, I’ll see you around Rei.” She stood alone, staring at the building in front of her, should she go in? Or will he come to her? Rei took her chances and walked in. A bell sounded overhead; there was a loud bang. She brought her attention to a short and stout elderly man who seemed to have fallen from his chair. “Oof! Come in, come in.” The man got to his stubby feet and almost waddled over to her. “Hello! You must be Rei! I am Mayor Hamilton. Welcome to Harmonica town!” Rei offered him a smile and extended her hand to him. They shook briefly before she brought her hand to her head. “Thank you, it was a long ride, but worth it to see how amazing this place it. “ “Good! Good. I am so glad you like it. Now, I will show you around, and get you settled in to your new place. Come along.”It didn’t take very long; she didn’t very many shops, and only met a few people. A little boy and his father who ran a fish shop of some sort, The Mayors son Gill, The carpenter and his apprentices, Kathy who worked at the bar. And a few other who’s names escaped her. The town and its surrounding area’s were beautiful. It left Rei in awe every time she saw something new. Until they got to her farm, it looked as if no one had been in the house for years. The land was cluttered with litter and over grown foliage, the house and barns looked like they could fall over if you sneezed the wrong way. She didn’t know how she was going to fix all of this with what little money she had AND start growing crops. Hamilton must have noticed her disapproving stare and rested a hand on her shoulder. “I know it isn’t in the best condition, but with some love and care, this place can be home sweet home in no time. I have faith in you.” Rei smiled and patted his hand taking another look around. She could see the potential, but she was still very scared. “I will do my best Mr. Mayor.” After Hamilton left, Rei walked into her new home and looked around with a sigh. A bare bed was in the corner, a small kitchen to her left, a bathroom with no door beyond that. And a small table, and chair, Her luggage sat by the door next to a tool box which she hoped would be full of things she needed to get this place in shape. Two months flew by as she got her house in working order, cleaning and fixing it up the best she could so that she could at least be comfortable. A sharp knock sounded at her front door, startling her. She hadn’t had any visitors since Hamilton dropped her off here, she wondered who could possibly be at her door. Rei walked over to the door and opened it a crack. “Yes?” “Hello!” Came a chipper young voice. Rei opened the door to an orange haired little girl she had never met before. “Um, Hello. What can I do for you.” The little girl started to shift from heal to toe, unable to hide her excitement. “We are having a get together in the town to welcome you! Grandpa and the Mayor asked me to come get you.” Rei panicked and opend the door more. She was a mess, no way would she show her face to the town looking like she did. “Oh, um…Come in. I need to get dressed and cleaned up…what is your name?” The little girl walked in and shut the door behind her. “My name is Chloe! I live in the Garman mine district with my grandpa and cousin!” Rei remembered being over there and meeting the carpenters, but she was unable to meet a few of the other shop keepers because of how late it was by the time they got there. “I see. Well, give me a few minutes and we will head to town.” With that, Rei opened her make shift curtain/door and shut it behind her. Quickly she began to groom herself. Washing her arms and face. She applied a little makeup and re-braided her hair, before stuffing the un-tamed mass under a white bandana. She changed into a pair of black leggings and a long black flannel shirt that went way past her curvaceous rear, and accented it with a thin white belt. Satisfied she wouldn’t scare anyone she walked out of the bathroom and slipped on a pair of flats. “Wow! You are really pretty Rei!” Rei blushed and gave Chloe a friendly smile. “Thanks. Now we should go.”Chloe grew on Rei immediately. She was so energetic and talkative. Rei never had any siblings, or a cousin, so being around Chloe was both weird, and entertaining. The walk to town didn’t take long, and once they got there, they were greeted with a loud roar of cheer and clapping. Rei blushed a deep red, putting her hand behind her head and looking down. She had never been in a situation like this. She wasn’t sure how to feel or react. It seemed like everyone wanted to meet her, giving her various gifts of tools, seeds, and even food. She was so overwhelmed by the whole thing, that by the time it was over she was exhausted. While everyone was saying their goodbyes, Rei was starting to pack up her new gifts into some cloth bags someone had given her. After everything was gathered she grabbed what she could. The load was heavy, but she was grateful. She reached out for another bag, and nearly toppled over. After getting her balance, she reached out again with her already full hands and tried to grab the bags again. It was a split second and she was falling backwards. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the fall, and then nothing. She popped her eyes open, she was backwards, but not falling. Suspended in the air somehow. Rei looked up and saw a pair of beautiful grey eyes. She could then feel the strong muscles that had caught her before she fell; his hair was brown with a hint of red, spiked up. “Hey, Let me help you with that.”
