It was August 31st. Miku Hatsune's birthday. The day she turned 18. The day she just couldn't take it anymore.
It was early that morning, and Miku was still asleep. It was only 6:47AM, and Miku had her alarm set for 7:30AM. She didn't have to go to her hell-on-earth of a job until 8:00AM, and Miku was a girl who cherished her sleep. If she didn't get at least eight hours of it, she was just a groggy mess.
But that day, it didn't matter what time she woke up. It was her birthday, and a certain friend of hers' wanted to make it a special day. Technically, Miku was an adult now, and had more freedom. So, this friend naturally wanted to make the most of it.
'Shame she isn't 21 yet.' Luka thought, sneaking in through Miku's front door. The bluette had moved out of her family's house at only 16, right into Luka's. Luka was 20 at the time, and had her own apartment. The two friends eventually worked something out, and now, Miku and Luka lived right down the hall from each other. They both had keys to each others' rooms, and we're allowed to go in and out at will.
'If she was, we could drink...I mean, it's legal for me to buy alcohol, but I don't want Miku drinking it until it's officially okay.' She thought, quietly walking to the kitchen and placed the birthday cake she'd made from scratch on the dining table. The apartment connected the kitchen and dining room, with the living room next to it, and a bedroom and bathroom in the back. It was small, but certainly comfortable.
Next, Luka got to work decorating the place. She hung streamers along the walls, then got out the big banner that she had costum-made. It said "Happy Birthday, Miku!" in huge, colorful letters, and even had a picture of the teal-haired-girl on it. It cost $15.00, but Luka was willing to spend $15,000.00 dollars if it made Miku happy. She would do anything to see Miku smile–she loved her friend that much.
But that right there was mainly the cause of Miku's problems. Luka loved her, yes; but as a friend. That hurt Miku so badly. Just hearing Luka say friend caused Miku's heart to curl up into a little ball and die. Metaphorically, of course. Miku did, however, literally want to pin Luka down and...well, fuck the living daylights out of her. But she couldn't. That would ruin their friendship, and Miku would feel guilty.
So, as always, Miku stayed quiet, pretending to be the innocent girl that Luka knew and loved. She stood back and watched as Luka got crushes on other guys and girls, only to have to console her when things didn't work out. But if Luka and those other people weren't meant to be, it gave Miku a small spark of hope that she might just be "the one" for Luka.
However, at the moment, Miku was thinking nothing of her troubles. She was just dreaming of cotton candy clouds, and chocolate oceans with rock-candy shores. Miku often had those sorts of dreams, and sometimes she wished that they would come true. That she could live in a house made of cinnamon sticks, and whenever she went outside, she could eat anything around her, because it was all sweet. But if she did have that life, she knew something would be missing, and it would be Luka. So, Miku continued to wake up, go to her hell-on-earth of a job, visit Luka, and go back to bed. Because even when the who she was nearly positive was the love of her life didn't return her feelings, Miku had to wake up. Miku simply had to see Luka's beautiful face.
Speaking of which, Miku wouldn't have to wait much longer to see said face. It was now 7:18AM, and Luka was nearly done with her preparations. She just had to be done in twelve minutes or less, because that's when Miku would wake up. She had decorated the place, and set up the cake. She had placed the candles in the cake, which also had "Happy Birthday, Miku!" written across it in teal icing. Luka would wait until later to light the candles, because if she did it ten, they'd melt all over the cake before Miku woke up to blow them out. Luka doubted that her friend would enjoy wax-covered cake.
7:29AM, and Luka was sitting on the sofa. She'd checked everything about a million times, so it was completely ready. She leaned her head back slightly and closed her eyes, tired. She'd been up all day. However, she didn't get to relax for long before hearing the blaring of an alarm. Luka jumped up off of the couch, turning off the light and crouching behind the piece of furniture. Although the sun had risen a while back, Miku's choice of curtains blocked out the light completely, so without the ceiling light, the room was nearly pitch black.
Luka heard a loud groan, then the alarm stopped. She waited, grabbing a handful of confetti that she'd placed there for easy access. After about two minutes, Miku exited her bedroom, her long hair not even in its signature twin-tails yet. Her locks dragged on the floor behind Miku, likely collecting dirt, but she didn't care. She flicked on the light and began walking to the kitchen, but froze. "What the–"
"SURPRISE!" Luka yelled, jumping out from behind the sofa. She threw the confetti up, and it rained down perfectly, as if she'd practiced this multiple times before–which she had. Miku jumped back, startled, letting out a shocked yelp.
Once the bluette realized it was only her friend, she relaxed and looked around. She tilted her head slightly, wondering what this was all about, before seeing the banner hung over everything. 'How could I forget? It's my birthday...Did Luka do all this?' Miku thought, astonished at how Luka could've managed to accomplish this before Miku woke up.
"Luka, you did all this...?" Miku asked, glancing around the room. Luka nodded in response, grinning.
"Of course I did! My best friend is turning eighteen, that's huge! I wanted to make it special. I would've brought wine, but–wait...Miku? Are...are you crying? What's wrong?" Luka asked, concern filling her voice. She immediately walked towards her friend, ready to comfort her. However, Miku just couldn't handle it anymore. She burst into tears, then ran past Luka, burying her face in her hands.
Naturally, Luka ran after her, but Miku had a head start. They both lived on the third floor of the apartment building, but taking the elevator would give Luka plenty of time to catch up to Miku.
Honestly, Miku felt horrible for running away from Luka, after she did all that. But she just couldn't take it–all the frustration that had been building up inside of her just overflowed. Bolting down the stairs, she nearly fell four times, but managed to get out of the building. She was still in her pajamas, but she paid no attention to that as she ran outside.
Where she was running to, Miku didn't know. She just ran. Away from her problems. Away from her best friend that she was in love with, but also had a strong sexual attraction to. Away from everything that made her so miserable.
Away from Luka.
