A/N: I have been playing with this idea forever. This may be my fanfic that it will take some time to update; I have to refamiliarized myself with the Legend of Zelda world and terminology. So yeah bear with me and don’t give up on me. ^.^ Also sorry for any grammar and spelling mistakes. I quickly skimmed over before posting.
Chapter 1
“Link,” Link turned around to face his wife. He almost winced at the sour look upon her beautiful blue face. Link ran his right hand through his hair.
“Yes, my queen.” He simply stated. Her sour look deepened before she sighed in defeat.
“Even after 20 years of being married to me and the birth of our son, Derek, you still talk to me as if you have never loved me.” Link opened his mouth and then closed it again. Ruto looked at her aged husband and frowned. When was the last time they were ever in love with one another? Since the beginning of their story, Link would always have a distance look in his eyes soon after they made love. It was almost as if he was wishing to be somewhere else. Granted she was not a human like him, or he like her. She wanted to grind her teeth in bitterness. “It is Queen Zelda isn’t it? It has always been her. I should have realized this from the beginning. Haven’t I been there for you after the queen had married her betrothed? Wasn’t I who held you all those nights you wanted to be alone? Hasn’t it been I to be at your beck and call every time you needed me?!” Her voice shook as it rose with anger and fear.
Link just stood there quietly and looked away from his wife. He knew what he has put her through and out of his own selfishness he continued to play her emotions. He knew that she could never replace Zelda in his heart. Even now he was terribly in love with the Queen of Hyrule. He felt so ashamed.
“Mother, Father, are you two in there?” A knock and a deep masculine voice was heard. Ruto shook her head at the defeated stance her husband took before opening the door to their chambers. Ruth smiled at her son. He was his father’s double. There were only a few features that he had that were his mother’s but they were so minor that you had to look closely in order to see them. Ruth was proud of the man her son was becoming, in many ways he was like his father all those many, many years ago. The young man that had stolen her heart, but if only she could have realized it then that she would never be able to hold his.
“Oh Derek, my son.” Ruth proudly spoke as she embraced her son. He was as tall as all the other Zoras of their Domain. He may not have the blue color skin that all the other Zoras had but could breathe under water and swim faster than any other Zora.
Derek smiled as he hugged his mother. He looked at his father. He frowned when he took in his father’s defeated stance. He knew that his mother had said something unsettling. He wasn’t eavesdropping for nothing. He knew of his father’s love for Queen Zelda. It was always apparent in his eyes with every longing look he would give the queen when they visited for social events. He knew that his father was also promised to his mother many years before they were married. His father had loved his mother dearly but not in the way she loved him.
Link caught his son’s look of pity and smiled at his son. Ruto let go of her son and turned to her husband.
“Ah Derek, nice of you to drop by, we are about to leave for Hyrule. You must get ready for today is a very special day.” His father said hopeful and Derek did not miss the pained look from his mother.
“Today is Princess Amelia’s 18th birthday.” Derek simply said. Link nodded with his hopeful smile still present.
“I know that she will be looking for a handsome suitor.” Ruto smiled and nudged her son. Derek nearly blushed at the thought. He and the princess had grown up together and he had watched her grow into the young lady she was today. He always had affections towards the Hyrule Princess, she was the splitting imagine of her mother. She had the courage of her father. King Sabastian was a wise and noble king along with his wife; they ruled Hyrule with unity, courage, and compassion. But that was before he had passed away in his sleep. He fell ill and the princess and queen mourned long after his passing.
“Mother, I know you want me to marry well but Amelia and I have grown up as close friends. It would feel a little awkward to court the princess.” Ruto laughed and smiled at her son’s embarrassed expression. Link couldn’t help but smile.
“Nonsense my son, I have seen over the years how you have watched the princess.” Derek’s face fell.
“Mother, now I believe you are just seeing things.”
“We shall see my son.” Link gave his son a weak smile. Derek shook his head.
