Four-year-old Jesse looked up at Arnold, then around at the room in front of him. They had gone into a huge building that morning, only for Jesse to realize it was school. He noticed the art supplies and made a bee line for them, a smile on his face. Arnold smiled as he turned to the teacher, a young lady from the United States.
“He loves art.” Arnold said.
The woman smiled and nodded before taking the backpack and jacket, “I’ll be sure to keep that in mind. Back in the states, I used to encourage their hobbies, whether just a phase or not. Let them know it’s perfectly fine to pursue. Oh, I didn’t get any of the kids papers this morning, the office is a bit behind, does he have any allergies or illnesses I should know about?”
Arnold stared at her, never having heard that accent, he shook his head and nodded, “He can’t have anything citrus. Oh, that reminds me.” He reached into his pocket and handed the lady something she quickly recognized as an epi-pen, “If he does consume any, or even touch it, he’ll have a reaction. If he consumes or it gets near his throat, it’s anaphylactic shock.”
“I understand. I have a nut allergy myself. Same situation. I’ll let the lunch folks know. What’s his name?”
“Jesse, um. His mother is…in the hospital. We have custody of him and his sister that I’m sure he’ll talk about until she’s released.”
“Alright.” The lady smiled and soon the class started.
Jesse enjoyed the class, running around with new friends and listening to the teacher talk to him. While they had a set routine and schedule, it was all fun and games to Jesse. He hadn’t realized he was learning the entire time, but not that it bothered him. The only thing he missed was the twins and his little sister. But when he asked Victoria or Arnold about them going as well, they would tell him that the other three were still too young to go. He was told the twins would start the year after.
Waiting to be picked up on a bright and sunny day, Jesse swung his legs as he sat in the chair. He was the last one to be picked up since Arnold was coming back from his job, which had an unexpected turn in another town.
“I’m here!” Arnold said.
The teacher smiled as she looked up, “All set then?”
“Yeah…sorry about that.”
“Please don’t be, he was an angel. I understand work things, before I was a teacher, I was a traveling nurse. Oi…”
Arnold smiled as Jesse hugged him, excited to head back home.
It had been a year since he saw his mother, but Emily and Jesse raced down the driveway where Bailey was standing, her arms wide open and tears coursing down her rosy cheeks. She cried as she knelt to the ground, not caring that dirt was getting on her new jeans as her two children slammed into her shoulders, crying out for their mother. She held them close, her fingers buried in their hair.
Finally, she was able to get the help she needed, on medication that was helping. She still liked reading her bible, she intended to continue going to church but she had promised herself she wouldn’t force Jesse or Emily to be religious, not after hearing stories in the institution. She had what she needed under control and wonderful doctors. Thanks to them, she had her children once again.
“Bailey! We’re so glad to see you! How are you doing?” Victoria asked, kneeling to the sobbing mother.
Tucking her babies in their bed for the first time in a year, Bailey wiped her eyes. Daniel had left them or good, but he was forced to pay child support for Emily, and she had started the process of DNA matching to the father of Jesse. Soon he would be forced to pay child support for the son he didn’t know he had. On top of that, Arnold and Victoria offered to continue watching the kids when they found out that Bailey took a job at the local vet’s office.
She sat on the end of Jesse’s bed, smiling as he snuggled up with his stuffed lion. It had been a long, hard year. But it was worth it to see her babies again. It was still a long road, but with what she had now…Bailey was sure she’d be able to keep going. Getting up and walking out, she looked over at Victoria who smiled at her.
“Fast asleep, is he?”
“Out like a light. Thank you…so much.”
“Please, it was nothing. They really bonded with Armin and Alexy. Honestly, the twins took it harder. Alexy was really upset when Jesse left.”
“We’re right next door. Please tell Arnold I said thank you for keeping up with my home…I didn’t know the pipes froze last Christmas.”
“We didn’t either, until he had a hunch and came in.”
“I’ll pay you back.”
“Please. Bailey, you were dealing with what you had to deal with, it was nothing. Don’t worry.”
Bailey smiled at her, tears in her eyes. She was just glad to have her babies. She took a deep breath and took a sip of her water.
“…I really can’t thank you enough. They’re healthy, happy. They didn’t forget about me.”
“They wouldn’t.”
Jesse watched as his mother talked to the teacher, who was thankfully understanding of the switch in parental figures nearly halfway through the school year. He clung to her leg, not wanting her to leave. He just got her back.
“Mama, don’t leave!”
“I’ll be back to pick you up this afternoon.”
“Promise?”
“I promise. Arnold won’t start picking you up again until next week. But it’s only because mama is going to be working to provide for you.”
Jesse hugged her and watched as she left. He looked at his teacher with tears in his eyes. The woman smiled and sat on the floor with him, allowing him to snuggle against her and cry.
