The air travelled into the tent, feeling cool to the skin. Despite it being a quiet night, Sora still woke up and heard a rather upsetting sound. This noise sounded depressed, and yet it wasn't calling for help.
But it was sad.
Slowly opening his eyes, the first thing Sora could hear was a strange whimpering beside him. Frightened at first, Sora raised his torso quickly and immediately glanced at the person beside him. At the sight, his heart felt shattered. Riku appeared to be crying with real tears sweeping down his cheeks. Sora gulped, swallowing his own spit nervously. Extending out an arm, Sora wanted to touch Riku but then he drew his arm away ever so quickly.
"...Riku?"
"Hm?"
"Why are you crying?" Sora questioned, still sitting in his bedroll.
And even then, Sora never recalled seeing Riku cry before. He's seen Riku paranoid; scared; in shock, but he's never seen Riku broken down like this. Sure, Riku seemed pretty depressed at times, albeit that was his feelings in the past.
Shaking his head gently, Riku didn't really bother to look at Sora.
"I just had a bad dream, that's all."
"A bad dream? About what?"
"Just battling myself. It's like...even though he's gone-"
"We took care of him though, right?" Sora interrupted.
"Yeah, I remember. But it's like he's still inside me; like he doesn't want to leave me."
"I know you can't really control your dreams, but why do you keep thinking about your old self?" Sora checked, shuffling a little closer beside the silver-haired. "Can't you...ever let go of what's happened?"
"I...I don't know. I don't think the past is letting me move on, you know? It feels like a force that's holding me back, and I'm unable to move forward because of it."
Bravely placing a comforting hand onto Riku's shoulder, Sora continued to watch those tears fall. Even when those tears were sweeping Riku's cheeks, the brunette still pulled a warm smile. Well, one person had to stay happy, that's for sure. Raising his free hand, Sora brushed a few silver strands away from Riku's eyes. Blue eyes observed the green, and even when Sora comforted him, Riku still cried.
Thinking of what to say, Sora felt slightly clueless.
This was Riku's battle, and if Riku still had dreams of his past, then all Sora could do was comfort him.
"D-don't say that, Riku."
"How can't I? I know it's bad to think about what's happened...but when I dream of it; the memory just ruins my whole mood, even my day."
"Yeah, I get that. But you're bigger now, you know? I kinda thought you overcame the past."
"That's what you wanted to believe, and so did I. The dream I had last night will always be apart of me, I know, but I don't want it to be stuck with me now."
"Yeah, you've just gotta let the past go, really."
"Huh?" Riku finally glanced at Sora with a look of surprise on his face, but with this surprise, his tears stopped falling and he was able to look at Sora with a clear vision. "How can I?"
"Well, it's something that only you can let go of, but I'll always be here for you when you go through it. Oh, and Kairi, too!"
"I see. Letting the past go, huh? Well, as long as you're with me, I guess."
"Yeah, that's right."
"Kairi, too? That's good to know," he answered softly. Riku wiped the tears away from his face, albeit his eyes appeared sore red, and even his frown remained. "Thanks for being here for me and stuff."
"The fact that you're even questioning it is kinda funny, actually."
"Well, I feel it's kinda difficult when I'm feeling like this...you know...I just feel alone...and hallow."
"That's okay, Riku."
"It is?"
"Yes, because I'll always be here for you, even if you try to push me away. I'll always come back. We promised to be friends forever, right? Well, I'm keeping that promise."
Simply, Riku just smiled.
"Friends forever?"
"Yeah, that's what we promised, right?"
Glancing away, Riku simply looked down at his sleeping bag and gave a nonchalant shrug at the thought. "Friends," he repeated in a quieter tone. "That's nice."
But then, at that very response, Sora's smile turned into a frown. His blue eyes widened, and they even gained a sparkle to signal that he could possibly start gathering tears any second now. A huff emitted his lips and his shoulders dropped.
"Riku, why are you questioning our friendship?" Sora asked, losing his cheerful spirit. "Don't you want to be friends anymore or something?"
"What? No!" Riku shot back, his green eyes staring directly into those ocean-blue hues now. "I love being your friend. But, sometimes--"
"Sometimes - what?"
"It's weird...I feel a deep connection between us; it's hard to explain it. It just feels nice, but it feels more than just friendship..."
His mouth dropped a little, but he didn't interrupt this time. Sora allowed Riku to talk.
"I feel like...I love you, but I could be wrong. You're just always here to comfort me when I'm feeling down, and every time you're here with me...it just feels right. It doesn't even feel weird that I'm saying this."
"It's fine, really."
That smile appeared once more. Riku let out a sigh of relief.
"Really?"
Scratching the back of his head, Sora snickered.
"The feeling's mutual, Riku," he admitted.
"Wow, so we both share this same connection?"
"Have you always felt like this, then?"
"Well, yeah, I've always had those feelings. I just found it strange. Do you remember when the giant wave came and we saw the Heartless for the first time ever? The day I lost you...and it took forever for you to find me...that's when I discovered these deeper feelings," he explained and gently shook his head again. "That's just how it is, I guess."
"That's a pretty long time you've been feeling that way."
"Are you surprised, Sora?"
"It just would have been nice if you told me sooner, you know?"
"I'm sorry."
Leaning in to Riku, the brunette coiled his string bean arms around Riku's torso. He gave the taller male a hug. This wasn't a quick, friendly hug, instead it was more deep and Sora couldn't let go. At this point, he was practically stuck to Riku like there was super glue spread between them. Riku snickered at the sudden embrace, and there was even a noticeable reddish tint stuck to his features. He felt shy to hug back.
"Now that we've changed the subject, do you think you'll be able to go back to sleep?" Sora asked, pressing his chin onto Riku's shoulder as he watched him.
"I don't think I can. I just keep thinking about the past and...I think it'll just get worse if I go back to sleep. I just feel scared."
"Oh? Would you prefer to watch the stars instead?"
Presenting a small nod, Riku beamed widely from ear-to-ear. "I would love that, actually."
"Yeah, it'll take your mind off that dream."
"Yeah, I guess it will. I hope you're right about that, Sora."
"I'll stay by your side, always."
Crawling out of the tent, Riku sat on the grass outside. Green eyes glanced up towards the night sky, completely in awe. It seemed peaceful tonight with no sign of creepy monsters anywhere. No Heartless, no other company - it was only Sora and Riku under the stars tonight. Sora followed behind Riku and joined him on the grass.
"It feels nice out here, huh?"
"Yeah, it does."
Beside him, Sora watched Riku more than the stars, even though Riku never looked back at Sora. He observed that watchful face and those short silver locks that gently danced with the calm breeze. No matter how much company Sora offered, Riku still seemed pretty worried. But that was normal, and Sora understood why.
"I wonder if you can cuddle me again? For a little while..."
"Well, of course, it's a bit silly to ask," laughed Sora.
Scooching up beside Riku, the shorter male gave him the same embrace as before. And even though Riku seemed too shy to return the hug, Sora refused to let go this time.
