The way to Faith’s house was the same every time, and Ren, being new to a human body, didn’t really notice nothing as he moved. He was used to walking long distances, forgetting that he was no longer a robotic animal, but a human being with needs and wants. This time, he forgot water. He didn’t notice the thirst though, focused on making his way to her home. He didn’t even realize water was running near him, or the sound of his own feet walking through the forest. He stepped over a route, not even registering that it was there. Flowers bloomed around him, and those went unnoticed. Ren was bored, Aoba was busy with his lover who had just undergone a surgery that even Ren understood was going to be a rough recovery.
Faith groaned. She held her lower back as she stood up. This year’s crop was a bit rougher on her. It didn’t help she took that fall near the ravine earlier in the winter, and it messed up her lower back a bit. She knew she had to see her chiropractor, but with all the fighting going on in the Residential areas, oh hell no. She stopped, focusing on a noise.
“Hello, anyone there?”
“How did you know I was here?”
“Ren! I heard you.”
“…Heard?”
“…Hearing? Ears?” Faith said, picking up her basket then looking at him.
“Is that something I can do?”
“…Y-Yes.”
“Never noticed.”
Faith shook her head for a moment, a double take, then took her carrots in. “How did…wait. Are you telling me you don’t know that sense well? Weren’t you a Japanese Spitz Allmate?”
Rani looked up, watching as her master walked across the floor to the sink, then she happily jumped up, tail wagging when she saw Ren. He was one of very few human beings she enjoyed being around. She trotted up to him, seeing him look down, unsmiling. Rani understood that Ren used to be an allmate, like her, only…now he was in a human body, like her master, Faith. It was taken Ren a while to learn his emotions.
Dumping the carrots into the sink, Faith turned and looked at Ren. “Ok, answer me this. What senses DO you know?”
“Senses?”
“…Oh boy. Ok, you have…five basic senses. Taste, Smell, Touch, Sight, Hear. They let you enjoy your surroundings and things like that.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Has…anyone explained this?”
“Aoba does. But he’s busy with Maxi.”
“Oh…that’s right she underwent bottom surgery the other day. Ok, I’ll help you.”
Ren looked at her, his emotionless face unchanging. Faith swore she’d fix that too.
“Ok, let’s start with…taste.”
“How?”
Ren sat on the floor of the sunroom, playing with Rani. Rani ran back and forth, enjoying the ball game that Ren was playing. She couldn’t help but pant as she took a break. Her newer model allowed her to act more like the wolf she was modeled after, and not like Ren’s old model at all. She cocked her head when he sniffed the ball that obviously had been in her mouth, but he didn’t react.
“Don’t you…. why would you do that?”
“Do what?”
“…Smell my ball? I had it in my mouth.”
“…I don’t know.”
“Is that something that’s left over from when you were a dog allmate?” She asked, settling partially on Ren’s lap.
“I suppose it is.”
He sat a bit, petting Rani until they both heard Faith.
“Ren! Rani! Time to eat!”
Rani lunged away, excited. Despite being a robot, Rani had a specialized diet that she enjoyed immensely, especially since Faith had customized it to be like her own culture. She slid past her bowl on the floor, then ran back. Ren simply stepped in, looking at Faith at the stove.
“Ren, c’mere.” She spoke.
He walked over, seeing her bring up a spoonful of something…but what?
“Here, open.” She said, holding a hand with a cloth under the spoon. Ren gave her a look, but did as he was told, leaning froward a bit. Faith gently tipped the stew into his mouth. “Pay attention to it.”
He looked at her funny, but slowly chewed. For the first time, Ren realized...
“That’s good!”
“Yay. That’s taste.”
“Taste?” HE said, sniffing the air.
Faith looked at him, “And... that’s smell. But we’ll work on taste first. More?”
“Yes please!” Ren said, a smile appearing.
She smiled, and scooped out a bowlful of the stew. “Bread?”
“…What?”
Faith took a chunk of bread, broke a piece, dipped it in the stew then popped it in his mouth. Ren soon was nodding quickly.
“Hey, Ren!”
Ren looked up from the book in his lap, seeing Faith holding something round out to him, and brown. Confused, he looked up at her.
“It’s a cookie. Here is another item for taste. It is sweet!”
Ren slowly took a bit, then grabbed the cookie. Faith smiled and sat next to him. The feeling of having this man sitting next to her, childishly enjoying a cookie that he never noticed before.
“So…what do you think of taste?”
“I like it!” He said, wiping crumbs off his lips.
There is something I would love to taste-
Faith shook her head, then looked up at Ren once again. Boy that one came out of nowhere.
“See those were good tastes, there’s also bad tastes.”
“How would I know?”
“Trust me. You will know. You would spit it right back out. Want to stay tonight? We will learn about…. oh, let us say smell, tomorrow. I have stuff I got to throw away, my big freezer went down but luckily there was very few meat packages in there. Time to replace that. I will need Mink’s help.”
Ren nodded.
“Great, let me get the shower going then.”
Ren felt the water slipping down his body, but he learned about bad tastes. Faith was on the other side, laughing hard at his decision. She figured he would learn, but she never thought he would up and lick soap off his hand. She tried so hard to keep it silent but he glared at her none the less when he poked his head out of the curtain and accepted the water from her.
“You don’t eat soap Ren!”
“Shut up!”
Faith cackled, holding a towel. She offered it too him when the curtain opened, but she certainly did not expect him to be standing right there, bare ass naked. Clearly Ren did not see an issue with it.
“REN SHUT THE CURTAIN! DAMN!”
