There was nothing Albert Silverberg hated more than a wasted afternoon.
His contact in Vinay del Zexay had not shown up, leaving the young tactician drinking an ale far too strong than his liking in a bright city that reminded him far too much of the pristine Gregminster. He sat in a secluded corner of the dimly-lit pub, his gaze drifting disinterestedly over the other bar patrons as his mind ran through calculations.
Master Luc would not be pleased by the delay, but there was little the wizard could do in their current predicament. They needed information on the assignments of the Six Renowned Zexen Knights, as well as details on Zexen patrol paths, to begin their plans. Without the information his contacts had, Master Luc’s entire plot was postponed for another day or two -- possibly longer, if he could not find a reliable contact before then. He smiled bitterly at the possibility of more stilted plans, swirling his drink idly before drinking.
“You never struck me as a beer drinker.”
Albert started at the unexpected voice, setting his empty glass down a bit harshly as he tried to swallow. The strong ale hurt his throat as it went down, the beginnings of tears stinging his face as he breathed deeply. He fought the urge to wipe at his eyes and scowled at his unwelcome visitor. “What are you doing here?” he rasped, mentally cursing himself for the signs of weakness. “Are the others--”
“Relax -- I came alone,” the dark knight cut in smoothly, having slipped out of the shadows and into the chair opposite of Albert’s. “Although, seeing as your precious contact never showed up, I almost wish Luc had come along.”
He suppressed a glare by focusing on anything but the smirk on Yuber’s face, which proved difficult due to the prominence of the feature on the other. “You haven’t answered my question.”
Yuber tipped his hat snugly over his forehead, the combination of blond bangs and black visor obscuring his eyes. “I didn’t, did I?” he drawled, idly rubbing left thumb and index fingers together.
When it became apparent to the young man that his new companion was not going to answer, he went back to Yuber’s first statement. “I rarely drink. The drink was free, in any case.”
“Free?” The inquiry was lazy and hardly polite. Albert had to question whether the black-garbed knight was actually curious or not, quickly coming to his own conclusion. He studied the man silently for a moment before making his declaration.
“I never realized demons could become bored as well.”
The waning smirk regained a bit of its strength. “Sharp observation.”
Albert did not react to the comment; he had heard enough in his short life to recognize empty praise when he heard it. “Why bother me? I’m sure there are more … interesting people out there for you to torment.”
Once again, Yuber did not reply with words. He turned his attention briefly to assess the woman heading towards them, losing interest in the waitress as she stood before them. The buxom young woman winked suggestively at Albert, setting down another drink for the strategist. “Another one on the house, handsome.” She picked up the empty glass and strutted away, failing to notice the disdain touching Yuber’s lips.
“She thinks you’re easy.”
The dark-haired strategist nodded in agreement to Yuber’s remark. “I’ve been told I am difficult to read.”
Just like any master strategist, the knight noted, familiar with the workings of the Silverberg family from his years of experience. Provide me with something worth my time, mortal.
“I have studied the history of Harmonia and a few of the countries branching from the kingdom’s rule. Somehow, it doesn’t surprise me to discover that a mysterious ‘black knight’ has been mentioned throughout documents of Harmonia and the Scarlet Moon Empire.” Albert did not look directly at the blonde as he spoke, feigning nonchalance as he analyzed the knight. “‘A deadly soldier ruled by chaos, with goals unknown by all.’”
Yuber had to chuckle at the quote. “Quoting your ancestors now? Do all Silverbergs do that?”
Albert still avoided gazing at his strange associate, averting his attention to the drink he had idly turned in his fingers. He lifted the glass to his lips, feeling the cool liquid pass through his throat without difficulty. There was a faint … aftertaste that bothered him, but he ignored it due to the fact that he could not compare two entirely different drinks. “I only quote when necessary. I would call this an occasion worthy of the practice.” He paused deliberately, staring at Yuber’s lazily-splayed fingers and wondering how they could appear free of calluses. “The books do not have much information on you, so I am left to speculate.”
“Why speculate when you can have all your questions answered now?” Don’t bore me, Silverberg, the demon mentally warned.
A slight smile cracked the younger man’s serious features. “I enjoy the occasional enigma. It’s much more interesting to leave the mystery alone and see what becomes of it in the future.” A bit interesting so far… What type of demon are you, dark knight? Is history truly as correct as it has been written?
No questions? I don’t know whether to be disappointed, annoyed, or bored. He watched through the fringes of his hair as the white-coated man across from him took another swig of the drink. “I’m growing weary of your circular speech, Silverberg.”
Albert cocked his head in such a way that the dim candlelight made his eyes gleam. “I find it hard to believe that you came simply to talk.”
“If I had hidden motives, I could have acted upon them by now,” challenged the other man.
“True,” relented the dark redhead, “but I believe that even a killer like yourself can be subtle when it suits you.” He took the time to sip his drink again, no longer minding the aftertaste to the beverage. His attention was entirely on the blonde that masked his face from all.
Yuber nodded slowly, giving the strategist his first direct answer in their conversation. “You must have your presumptions as to why. I’m curious to hear them.”
“Boredom is the killer of the deathless. As a demon thriving off war and disorder, you search for trouble. You would very well travel to the other side of the world to cure your ennui, but you have made a pact with Master Luc to see this war through until the end. Thus, you must come to me to awaken the beast known as war.” Albert smiled dryly at his own deductions. “I apologize for my inability to help the movement.”
The veiled knight chuckled appreciatively. “The entertainment is beginning to balance out my disappointment,” he lied smoothly. The mortal’s words ring a little too true…
Their conversation was interrupted by the shattering of bottles a few tables away. Yuber looked over his shoulder to see a cursing man rise and punch another man he had been sitting with. The third member of the party tried to act as a mediator, but was quickly caught in the brawl that upset the former quiet of the pub. Albert downed the rest of his drink, disgusted with the unnecessary fighting of idiots. “Do you mind if we take this talk elsewhere?” he inquired, blinking hard when the drink abruptly hit him. He grimaced at the sensation surging to his head, unable to place what exactly had been affected by the drink.
Yuber turned to face his colleague, eyes narrowing under the brim of his hat at the expression on Albert’s face. He took in the empty glass and the new flush the young man wore. “The drink was drugged,” he said flatly, a scowl appearing as he thought of the waitress who had given Albert his ‘free drinks.’ Pathetic mortals. Do they even realize who they try to seduce with their tricks?
“Your observation comes a bit late,” Albert managed, blinking furiously as it became hard to focus. He had to get out of here before his condition worsened. “Will you help me?” The request came easier than he had expected, but he dismissed it for frustrated desperation.
The dark knight briefly toyed with the idea of refusing to help the strategist, but quickly changed his mind when the redhead tried to stand and nearly collapsed. He stood and caught the man deftly, silently amazed by the potency of whatever drug had been slipped into the younger man’s drink. He wordlessly draped one white-sleeved arm behind his neck and supported his companion as they started for the door. Hidden eyes hunted for the woman that had drugged Albert, shooting a cold glare once they had attained their target.
I’ll be back for you, he vowed as he pulled open the door and led the strategist into the cool evening.
Albert leaned heavily against Yuber as they stumbled through the streets of Vinay del Zexay. His frustration and self-criticism waned as they left the bar, leaving him immersed in sensations that he rarely heeded. Yuber had mercifully kept calm during the entire ordeal, but the young man had to remind himself that he was still in trouble.
What kind of side effects did the drink have?
It was the last coherent thought he had before his already-blurred vision faded into obscurity.
He awoke wishing that he were dead.
Albert groaned and rubbed his face against his pillow, his entire body protesting as he tried to shift in bed. He met resistance to his left, which struck him as odd. What could possibly be solid enough in a bed to keep him from rolling over? Blinking wearily at the dim lighting normally associated with dawn, the young strategist looked to whatever it was cushioning his head.
Crimson and silver eyes met his glazed gaze.
“Good morning.”
Dark green eyes opened impossibly wide, tense and alert with those two words. “Y-- Yuber?” His throat was dry and his voice cracked with surprise.
Those strange, mismatched eyes disappeared for a moment, and Albert gasped when he was levered into a nearly-sitting position by lithe, deceptively-powerful arms. In this new position, he became painfully aware of his own nudity. His bed partner paid his awkwardness no heed, instead pressing a glass to his lips. “Drink. It’s just water.” Yuber waited patiently for the young man to follow his order, speaking only when he heard the other swallow. “I had a feeling you would need it after last night.”
“Last night?” Albert dimly remembered the night before, his head positively spinning. “What happened last night?”
“The drugged drink, remember?” Yuber refused to say more, wanting the tactician to struggle with his muddled memories.
Albert slumped, shuffling through his confusion to attempt to piece together his current situation. “We walked out of the bar and I blacked out… That’s all I remember.”
“How disappointing…” Yuber’s breath was hot against his neck as it spoke. “I take it that you don’t remember this, then?” He emphasized with a forceful kiss that startled the other man, pinning the other body underneath him as skillfully as he dispatched any enemy. When they parted, Albert stared up at the demon with a mixture of shock and bewilderment. Through disheveled red hair, he could see the cascading blond hair that acted as a private curtain for himself and the dark knight. A wicked grin creased the demon’s face as he gazed down. “Speechless, little earth star?”
Still stunned by the kiss, Albert paid little attention to the nickname. He could not look away from the eyes above him as he whispered. “You raped me.”
“Now, I hardly think that’s fair,” sniffed the other, rolling in such a way that he swept Albert to lay against his chest. “I would hardly call it rape when one literally begs to be fucked in the middle of the street.”
The color drained out of Albert’s face at Yuber’s words. The very notion was unbelievable to his ears, but he could not find any dishonesty in the harsh statement. He remained motionless against the other man, lax and unresponsive as he stared off into the darkness. The fact that he was in bed with another man paled in comparison to the fact that he had begged to be fucked.
I thought I had gotten rid of that word in my vocabulary…
A soothing hand ran through his short tresses, slowly bringing him back out of his state of shock. He did not fight the demon as he kissed the line of his jaw, waiting for Yuber to stop before speaking. “The waitress that drugged my drink--”
Yuber cut him off by placing a finger on his lips gently, his evil smile visible at such an intimate proximity. “I’ve already taken the liberty to deal with her,” he said coolly, not bothering to hide the absolute ruthlessness in the meaning.
Albert found himself trusting the blonde’s words, closing his eyes as Yuber’s lips found his own once more. What have I gotten myself into? he had to wonder, slowly working his arms around Yuber’s neck. What am I doing?
So, the action from last night wasn’t all due to the drink, the blonde thought to himself, amused by insistence the redhead presented. The strategist born under the Chikai Star certainly had his little surprises. Perhaps, young Silverberg, you can alleviate my boredom for awhile…
Elsewhere in Vinay del Zexay, Zexen knights investigated the decapitation and mutilation of a woman of questionable occupation. From the cuts and slashes on the body, the knights came to the conclusion that the woman had been tortured for a long period of time before she was finally beheaded. The murder weapons were twin swords, as the markings on the neck hinted that the woman had been decapitated with a scissor-like motion.
Unfortunately, the knights had no suspects.
Uh … I wasn’t really expecting the story to take such a dark turn. It all started innocently enough … but I guess things can’t stay very ‘innocent’ with Yuber around, huh? *sweatdrops* Well, my thanks to any reviewers! ^_^
