The following morning began with dreary clouds and rain. Starr and Einao finished their breakfast and parted ways, arranging to meet one another for the midday meal. Einao worried about her being with the dark elf. But as he saw Idarin and Aeral approaching her, he relaxed. They were capable, Idarin was carrying his heaviest shield and Aeral was wearing his finest heavy armor. They would keep her protected. As he watched, the three of them entered the brig together. Satisfied, he left to begin his patrol.
Inside the brig, Starr and the others waited for a while and then Idarin and Aeral left. Idarin left first, and Aeral followed a few minutes later. Neither of the guards liked the idea of leaving her, however the dark elf inside had insisted and, more importantly, so had Starr.
Gathering her nerves, Starr disengaged the locks and swung the door open. Unsurprisingly, the dark elf was already aware of her presence and had been watching the door. “Feeling more cooperative today?” She asked, not quite able to keep the sarcasm out of her voice. Her eyes trailed over the injuries she’d given him the day before. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion and no small amount of surprise. They were already mostly healed.
But how could that be? Those wounds had been deep!
Shin’s lips twisted into a small grin as he noticed her surprised expression. Apparently neither she nor the others had realized the significance of some of the small markings that adorned his chest, arms, and legs. The inks and dyes had been infused with healing magics. The markings were a favor granted to him by the High Priest’s of Rune and Schuttgart, payment as it were, for a job he’d done for them. “Depends on exactly what you mean by ‘cooperative’.” He answered.
Her eyes narrowed. But before she could say anything, he continued. “So, your spells. How long do the weapons last?” He nodded at the shard of an ice dagger that was laying on the ground. The dagger, although broken, was still mostly solid. It had hardly melted all night.
The question caught her off guard and she answered unthinkingly. “They last until I cancel the spell.”
Shin slowly digested the information for a moment before asking another question. “The other daggers melted last night, that one didn’t. Why?”
Starr huffed. “I’m not explaining how my magic works.”
“Information for information, hrea.” Shin murmured as he watched her. Her hair was braided in a single plait down her back. While pretty, he found he preferred to see it loose. That thought sent his mind to wonder if she slept with it loose or braided. One thought rolled into another, and he suddenly found himself wondering, had she lain with her sentry last night? To his utter surprise, the thought of her clinging to the sentry like she’d clung to him that first night made him hate the sentry that much more. As he watched Starr casually wave the spelled dagger out of existence, he wondered exactly what it was that made the sentry worthy of her attention.
He was an extremely good tracker. And he seemed to be as equally skilled with his daggers as Shin was his own, as long as he wasn’t throwing them. Perhaps the two had bonded over mutual injuries? The sentry’s poor vision and her injury to her back?
“And what information would you be willing to part with if I were to share that bit of knowledge with you?” Starr questioned, her tone almost sounding bored.
Brought out of his own musings, he answered. “I would be willing to part with an equal amount of knowledge.” Her deadpan stare made him chuckle a bit before he explained further. “Depending on just how secretive this spell information is, I will share something equally secretive.”
“No.” She answered flatly. “Since I have no way of knowing exactly what it is that you know, or don’t know, about our magics, it is a certainty that you could be completely surprised by what I tell you and yet you’d act as if you knew the information already and not pass on an ‘equal amount of knowledge’, as you say. There is no way for me to know the truth of the matter.”
“You’ll just have to trust me.” Shin gave her his most charming smile.
“No.” She answered, an ice dagger forming in her hand.
Shin eyed the dagger warily. If he let her go down this path, it would harden her against him. “I can prove that I’m trustworthy.” He gave a low, somewhat gurgling squawk, clearly mimicking the cry of a bird.
The raven that had brought the military badges flew down from the rafter. Landing on his shoulder, the bird ‘presented’ the badges to her by holding them in its beak while lowering its head and extending it’s wings out wide.
“Go ahead. Take them.” Shin coaxed. “The bird will take your guards directly to where these delinquents are.”
Starr hesitated and then cautiously reached out toward the bird, her palm up. The raven neatly dropped the badges in her hand and finally rose up from its awkward position. “How do we know this isn’t a trick? A ploy to lure our guards into an ambush.”
“You don’t.” Shin replied. “And you won’t, until either you send a patrol out, or the band of thieves out there attack the fortress.” He gazed at her steadily. “I know the regiment they come from. They will be successful if they attack the fortress.” On this point, Shin was very serious. The regiment the three had come from was one that was celebrated for having slain untold numbers of orcs, taking out multiple high value targets, and capturing vast swaths of territory in the northern lands. A simple fortress would be a cinch.
Starr pocketed the badges. “I will inform Aelaru. It will be his decision whether or not a unit is sent out.”
Shin watched her turn to leave and called out to her, his voice not quite a whisper. “Forgetting something, hrea?” He paused only a moment before prompting her. “Your magic?”
Starr bit her lip before turning around and contemplating him. While she knew that giving information away to a prisoner was generally considered bad, she also knew that rewarding them when they cooperated was necessary. It encouraged them to continue cooperating. “The ice will not melt unless I command it to. When I created the ice last night, I wanted it to melt slowly, therefore it did just that. That particular shard you found must’ve escaped my notice.”
“So, a weapon of yours will theoretically last for a very long time.” He speculated, his mind going over the information. It might’ve escaped her notice, or it might’ve been a misfire, something she’d not intentionally meant to create. Shin could see some major benefits of such weaponry, as well as some downfalls. “I admit, I’ve not seen magic quite like yours.” Perhaps he’d get a chance to wield one of her weapons himself later...
An uneasy feeling settled in Starr’s stomach as she watched him. She got the feeling that she’d given him too much information. But what was done was done. However, she decided to reiterate a key point. “As I said, the ice melts when I command it.”
Smiling, Shin replied unconcernedly. “Ah, yes, I heard that part.” He motioned to the bird still on his shoulder with his head. “Might want to inform Aelaru of those miscreants. The longer they go unreported, the more chances they have to attack the fortress. And I would so hate to see anything bad happen to this lovely fortress of yours.”
Starr snorted sarcastically. “Sure.” Turning to leave once again, she groaned in frustration when he spoke again.
“Hrea? You’ve yet to use my name.” If she’d thought he’d forgotten about that, she was in for a rude awakening.
Annoyance flashed across her face. Turning back to face him, she stalked closer to him, unknowingly affording him the chance to breathe in her unique scent. Stopping just in front of him, she questioned him. “Why is it so important to you that I use your name? What does it matter? It changes nothing. You are still chained to the wall, still our prisoner.”
Shin very nearly laughed at that. Instead, he merely twisted his wrists in the iron banding. “Not exactly chains, hrea.” The only reason he was still imprisoned was because he’d allowed them to keep him that way. Nothing they’d done so far constituted anything that would truly immobilize him.
She pursed her lips. “What is that word? You’ve used it often.”
“I’ll make you another deal. You agree to call me by my name from now on, and I’ll tell you what the word means.” He countered swiftly.
She should walk away from him. She knew it. Yet, she also knew that he was going to continue to call her that, and it was going to bother her until she knew what it meant. Besides, she’d said it herself. Calling him by name didn’t change anything. So, why argue with him over it? “Fine... What was your name again?”
A bit insulted, he glared at her while responding stonily. “Shin.”
Her brows furrowed in confusion. “You were named after a part of the lower leg?”
“No. It’s a shortened form of my full name. Shinryne.” He waited to see if she would mock him like so many others had. He’d long since gotten used to it, but for some reason he felt like if she mocked him it would sting like it had once before.
Thinking it over, Starr asked him. “Okay, so, Shin, what does ‘Shinryne’ mean?”
His head tilted back slightly, surprised. That had sounded like a real question. No mockery, no insulting. Just, a real question as to the origin of his name. Or just a clever way to use both the long and short version of his name in one sentence. However, he’d take that. “It depends on the translation. The rough equivalents could be anything from ‘young blooded’ to ‘foolish elder’, depending on context. However, I prefer ‘youthful experience’.”
Starr nodded and then all but bolted for the door, trying to escape the room before he could think up something else to ask her about. As Shin watched her leave, he mentally ticked off another point on his list. Getting her to use his name wasn’t entirely about hearing her say it, although it had sounded nice coming from her. But when one named a thing or, in this case, elf, one was likely to keep it around. He was betting on the fact that if she knew his name, she would be less likely to want to kill him later.
Meanwhile, he realized that they were progressing away from her being a hostile interrogator and moving toward something that he might be able to use to his advantage. While this was a good thing for him, it wasn’t for her. A less honorable elf would’ve used every trick they’d been taught and turned this around into an interrogation of her long ago. Instead, he was biding his time and simply enjoying, to the extent that he could, her presence.
He took in a deep breath. The sentry’s scent was nearly undetectable. And his own was now entirely gone. Disturbingly, he found that he was disappointed that his scent was missing from her. Would she be willing to entertain him again if he bargained for it? The information he gave her didn’t have to be entirely truthful, just truthful ‘enough’.
