Chapter 1- Infiltration
Imperial Administrator Elena Derosa strode through the abandoned city streets of the system Capitol planet Meridian. The cool night air bit at her exposed skin, forcing her to clutch her cloak tighter to herself in an effort to keep the harsh cold at bay. Derosa reached her free hand beneath her cloak, feeling the reassuring caress of the metal of her laspistol at her belt. The small weapon would serve as her only defence if anyone dared to confront her. Derosa finally reached the high wall which separated the majority of Meridians Upper City from the cultural elite that pampered themselves within the secure district she was approaching, ensuring total security against any invading riff raff, but it’s effectiveness against the invading Tyrainds appeared limited. Once the Imperial Guard had demonstrated their inability to stem the invasion the majority of the residents had taken it upon themselves to retreat deeper into the inner colonies which remained far more protected against any threat massing itself within the system. Administrator Derosa approached the security checkpoint, the guard post flanked on either side by Imperial Guardsmen. The two soldiers each appeared to be young men, likely recruits considered even too green to be of much use on the front lines and instead had been assigned the ‘worthy task’ of maintaining the security of Meridian’s high society. Their uniform was crumpled and stained heavily with mud and rain, the recent attacks obviously forcing the soldiers into longer and longer shifts. Derosa reached into her cloak and displayed her security pass, brandishing the piece of plastic as though it were an effigy of the Emperor in an effect to hold the heretic at bay. During her training in the Imperial Military her father had always taught her ‘It does not matter if you have the proper authorization or not, all that is required is that you look the part and you can infiltrate any male security system’. The guard scanned the ID, appearing in awe at the very prospect of even seeing a security clearance of this level. The Guardsman appeared to be conflicted over precisely what to do. Derosa accepted the card back, stepping between the guards with practiced grace she entered the secured area. They made no move to impede her advance. **************************** Derosa continued through the city streets unchallenged by either the Imperial Military or the Tyranid Horde, the area having been long since abandoned by the wash of dignitaries and aristocrats who had either purchased a shuttle off the planet, were hiding beneath the ground in a secure shelter or dead. It made no difference too her, her only concern was that she found what she was searching for. Derosa followed the street layout projected from her data slate, she appeared just down the street from the extravagant Manor of the Meridian Governor. Finding the house was a simple task, infiltrating it however would be far more challenging. *********************************** Piercing red eyes watched from an overhanging rooftop, watching silently as the Imperial mice scurried blindly through their exit-less maze. The creatures eyes passed down to see a cloaked figure trying to pry open one of the ground floor windows of one of the grand stately homes further down the rain soaked street. “Farseer” the creature spoke into the void. “We have arrived at the target. A human has infiltrated the target, they skulk with heavy feet and laboured breathes even as they attempts to maintain their façade of silence. Pathetic” “If the interloper poses a threat to your mission, kill them” the voice was cool and collected. “However if the opportunity presents itself, secure them and return to me. I would enjoy the opportunity to identify the newest player in our game of Dejarak. Complete your objective and return swiftly” the transmission went silence. The squad silently formed behind their leader, they crossed over their chests and vanished into the darkness in a flurry of alien light. ***************************** Sneaking past the exterior security had been a simple task, but now she was deep within the belly of the beast. Wandering the vacant halls, eerily deserted of the usual mob of security and administration staff usually found wandering the halls, she followed her memorized path through the maze of corridors and rooms, having visited the residence on sufficient official visits to have a semi-clear view of its layout. Derosa found the governors office with relative ease, simply searching for the largest office with far more pomp and ceremony than practicality. Entering the room she found the office abandoned, the harsh crack and accompanying flash of lightning flaring past the window built upon the dark atmosphere. Derosa flung back her damp hood she, laid her weapon down on the desk began. She began searching the room for anything of value; she began by searching the cabinet of folders sitting against the far left wall of the room. She crouched down in front of the cabinet, searching through the reams of pristine folders and files the governor maintained in an effort to discern any information of actual value. A noise stirred behind her, drawing her from her work. She snapped around sharply to face the source of the sound; she found nothing to dare to confront her. Derosa resumed her search for information, however the search proved harder than she had first predicted, forcing her to sift through a sea of endless papers. Another noise startled her from her work, this one she could not ignore, she turned sharply on her heel to face it. Two red bladed eyes pierced the dark veil of twilight. Derosa remained frozen in place, unsure whether this mysterious occurrence was a threat. Another set of red eyes formed beside the first, another and another, they continued to materialize until the blazing red oracles numbered twelve. Derosa knew she was in trouble, if she wished to survive the moment she would have to act. Derosa lunged towards the desk, reaching for her weapon left atop the desk. A harsh blow intercepted Derosa in midflight; a sleek arm struck her in the side with sufficient force to drop her to the ground. Derosa squirmed and writhed beneath her captor, trying to break her way free of the hold. However the act of defiance was in vain, only succeeding in allowing her assailant to gain an even tighter grasp over her. Her aggressor drew a pair of alien cuffs from their belt, clamping Derosa’s wrists together tightly. With their target braced they wedged Derosa against the leg of the large desk, allowing him to return their attention to their comrades. The leader gave a series of quick hand gestures to the five members of their squad, the agile motions far too quick and alien for Derosa to make any sense of the underlying meaning. The squad quickly dispersed throughout the room, one of them moving towards the cabinet she had been searching, another two moved to cover the door which served as the only entrance to the room. The last circled around to the front of the desk, sitting at the head of the table they began to slice through the console’s security systems. Each of their movements was graceful and timed. Derosa took this opportunity to gain a clear look at the creatures armour, the wide shoulder guards, the forearm plates with engraved blades longer than her arm, the alien pointed shape of their helmets, these creatures were not humans. They were Warp Spiders, Eldar spies! Their leader, the one who had overcome her, oversaw the operation, musing himself by retrieving her las-pistol from the desk, bouncing the weapon between his hands as if analysing its worth as battlefield salvage. The Warp Spider searching through the cabinet rose to their feet, a collection of folders clasped in his hand. The leader raised his arm sharply; his squad broke away from their assigned tasks in unison, forming a cult circle around him. The head of the group roughly grabbed Derosa by her collar, hauling her to her feet and pulling her tightly to his chest. The Warp Spiders crossed their bladed arms across their chests in ritual symmetry, the leader holding Derosa mimicked a mock version to compensate for his additional find. And suddenly one by one they were each consumed in a flurry of blue light. And within seconds, so was she. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
