The foyer looked different then normal. It was dark, and smelt of gas. Who spilt it? Dawn started to walk to the stairs, hoping to find her again. If she was her mother, then she would recognize her. She turned the corner, and saw her sitting on the steps as normal.
"Mama?"
The brunette smiled sadly, her hair wrapped around her neck. She always appeared like that, hiding her skin. Dawn sat down next to her, and leaned her head against her shoulder. She heard a crack but didn't think nothing of it. Her neck started to hurt, and she rubbed it.
The feelings poured into her.
"Mama I'm scared."
"Don't be."
Dawn couldn't help it.
"How did you die Mama?"
"I can't tell you...wake up Dawn."
"Mama?"
"Wake up."
Dawn opened her eyes and sat up in bed. She felt determined. She had to know about the death of her poor mother, who barely looked older then what she was.
And only one person in the world would know her the best.
Casey smiled as she pulled her black shawl around her shoulders.
"Meme!" Dawn cried out with a smile on her face and hugged her only grandmother.
"What are you doing out in this part of France?"
"I wanted to talk to you!"
Casey looked up, and frowned. A man had come with her.
"Dawn..."
"It's ok. This is Dajan, he's my coworker.
Dajan smiled and looked at the ground.
"Dajan. I haven't seen you in years, not since Brandi died."
"Yes, she was a good player on the team, but she had a terrible attitude."
Casey nodded.
"She always played tough. Like you." Casey looked at her granddaughter.
"Mama did what?"
Dawn came out of the bathroom with her tongue hanging out of her mouth and a blush on her cheeks. Dajan was still somewhat laughing.
"I should have warned you about that coffee."
"YOU DON'T' SAY MEME?!"
She sat down and pulled her cup to her, then took another sip. Dajan shook his head as she burnt her tongue a second time. Casey just looked at her.
"Your mother loved to have a cup of coffee in the morning. Nala really didn't. She preferred tea."
"Still does. Can you tell me how mama died?"
Casey sighed, and suddenly, she seemed much older then normal.
"From what I heard, she had broken her neck."
Dawn unconsciously rubbed her own, but Dajan had seen, but didn't say a thing.
"And when your aunt dragged her outside, she saw blood so she assumed that Brandi had been shot. I just hope that shot killed her first. I don't want to know if she suffered any. Oh, and she might have been pregnant." She took a sip of her coffee.
Dawn spit hers out over both of them, and looked at them after putting her hand over her mouth in surprise.
"S-sorry..."
Dajan wiped his face with a hand towel that Casey passed to him.
"Thanks for the bath..."
"I'm sorry Dajan."
Casey washed her face at the sink, then dried off. She took a deep breath and went into the living room. She came back with a old photo album and handed it to her.
"I made this shortly after."
Dawn looked through it. It was pictures of her mother. One was of her and Castiel, standing on the roof top. Another was when Brandi had stopped a fight with Nala, and another had been when she had fallen, then there was a night time picture.
Her mother looked so much in love in that one picture. The smile told a world of happiness. Why did she have to die?
"How old was she..."
"She was seventeen years old when she gave birth to you."
"How old was she when she died?"
"Seventeen. She only had you about a month before."
She really had been so young. It was a shock that she died so violently, but yet, she had a feeling Brandi hadn't died before she hit the floor.
The ride home was exhausting for Dawn, and she slept most of the way. Dajan felt bad that she heard about her mothers death in such a way. He sighed as he pulled into the drive.
"Hey, wake up."
Dawn yawned and looked out the window. The porch light was on and she rubbed her eyes.
"Twenty one years old and I feel like I'm a hundred."
He smiled and got out, walking around to open her door. She clung to his arm as he helped her out.
"You gonna be ok going in?"
"Yeah. I'm not tired enough to drop down Dajan." She shut the door and walked up the drive.
He went back to his car door, and watched her as she walked up. She stumbled slightly, as if she was drunk. She unlocked the front door and went in after waving to him. Dajan got back in, and drove away.
Dawn went and got herself some water before wondering something. She went into the living room where Nala apparently had fallen asleep. She took a long look at her mother, and in her head, aged her mother. They would have been identical if it wasn't for the hair and eyes. She sighed and woke her up.
"Auntie."
Nala woke up, and glared at her.
"I was sleeping."
"On the couch."
Nala realized that and got up.
"Oh sorry, I'm just grouchy."
"I can tell..."
Another room in the darkness. It was never-ending for Dawn as she sat on the bed, waiting for the next one. She felt like they were trying to tell her something. So far, she had learned of Lysander, Brandi and Castiel. Who was left?
Suddenly, she couldn't breath. Dawn fought for breath, tears filling her eyes. When the overwhelming feeling of grief hit her, she thought it was time to give up. The minute she did, she could breath again. A man stood in front of her.
"Hi Dawn."
She looked up to see honey colored eyes and blond hair. He looked so much like-
"KOPA!?"
"No..Nathaniel."
"Who?"
He smiled as he sat down next to her.
"Well. I'm not really related to you, but I could have been your uncle."
"Stop shitting me?"
"Excuse me?"
Dawn looked down.
"S-sorry. I'm like my mother I guess."
"You are. Both your parents actually."
"I hear that a lot..."
"Time for you to wake up. You're late for your job." He put a hand on her shoulder, smiled, then-
Dawn fell out of bed, and popped up.
"Shit!"
Dawn yelled at a couple making out behind the bleachers.
"GET THE HELL BACK ON THE COURT YOU FOOLS!"
"Dawn..."
Dajan shook his head. She was blunt and snappy, that was for sure. But this ache in his chest had to go away. He had actually gone to the hospital thinking he was going to have a heart attack. They had sent him home after really checking him over.
Dawn returned to his side.
"Why the idiots..."
He smiled at her. When she smiled back, he felt heat rising to his face, then turned to walk to the bleachers to write on his note pad about the lesson plan. She yelled at a couple more trouble makers before sitting down with him.
"Dajan, I want to do something."
"Like?"
"I want to find them Dajan."
"Who?" He already knew.
"My parents. They deserve to come home."
He knew it was that.
"Look. Figure out the next one. Who came to you in your dream last night?"
Dawn had told Dajan earlier in the week about those dreams.
"Someone named...Nathaniel."
"Ah. Ask your aunt about him."
"Hey Auntie, can I ask you about something?"
"Sure."
"Who was Nathaniel?"
The next thing Dawn knew, she was patching up her aunt's cut finger.
"Auntie..."
"I'm sorry darling. I just didn't expect you to ask me about him."
"Who was he?"
Nala sighed.
"He was my boyfriend... I loved him so much, I even had to endure watching him being choked to death." She started to cry.
"What did he do?"
"Oh he was the student body president. He was so kind, but he turned a blind eye to his only sister Amber. She was such...such a bitch to everyone, including Natty."
Nala wiped her tears.
"She even stole the exams one day. Brandi and I asked around and hunted down the key. I asked Lysander, but he didn't know where it was, so Brandi asked Castiel, who had been known to steal the key."
"Did he steal it this time?"
"No. He found it in the Garden Club, and got very upset at Brandi for thinking he stole it. It rocked their relationship for a couple weeks. It led up to her telling him she was pregnant. We returned the key to Nathaniel, who could have gotten in trouble, let us into the teachers lounge. We found a bracelet, and asked around. Brandi asked Castiel, who told her it was Ambers, but when I showed Natty...oh he got upset. Then he caught us talking to his sister, and found out. She got so angry at Brandi and I that she actually went to hit us."
Dawn gasped.
"Why would you let her do that to you!?"
"Oh Brandi was willing to fight back, but she was already in trouble. Just as she went to hit us....out of no where, Castiel put his arm around Brandi, and Nathaniel pushed Amber away from us."
"At least he helped you."
"He did more then that to me. He's Kopa's father." Nala broke down in a fresh wave of tears.
Now Dawn knew what Nathaniel had meant when he had told her that he could have been her uncle.
